A 22-WEEK SCAN REVEALED BABY LIAM’S RARE BRAIN CONDITION — SIX MONTHS LATER, HE FACED AN 11-HOUR SURGERY TO REMOVE HIS ENCEPHALOCELE AND RECONSTRUCT HIS SKULL

When Hannah first learned that her unborn baby had a rare brain abnormality, the future she had imagined for her child suddenly became uncertain. But what followed was a remarkable journey of medical challenges, determination and milestones that once seemed impossible.

Liam was born in March in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a 22-week pregnancy scan revealed that he had encephalocele — a rare condition in which part of the brain and its surrounding membranes protrude through an opening in the skull.

Following his birth, Liam was rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit, where he needed oxygen to help stabilize his condition. His earliest days were filled with medical assessments and difficult decisions as doctors worked to address the challenges he faced.

At just one month old, Liam underwent his first brain surgery to treat severe hydrocephalus, a condition involving a buildup of fluid in the brain.

But his biggest operation was still ahead.

In September, when Liam was only six months old, he underwent an extraordinary 11-hour procedure to remove the encephalocele and reconstruct his skull.

His recovery was slow and demanding. He spent 11 days in hospital and was unable to open his eyes during the first week after surgery — a period of uncertainty that tested his family’s strength and patience.

For Hannah, watching her baby endure so much at such a young age was heartbreaking. Yet even through the most difficult moments, she held on to hope that Liam would continue making progress.

Later, Liam was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a lifelong condition that affects movement and coordination. The diagnosis brought new challenges, but it did not define the limits of his future.

Determined to give her son every opportunity to develop, Hannah embraced a demanding programme of therapies, including occupational, speech, feeding, aquatic and music therapy.

Little by little, Liam began reaching milestones that made every difficult day worthwhile.

He learned to walk, communicate and eat without a feeding tube — achievements that became precious victories for a family that had spent so much time worrying about what the future might hold.

“Every little step forward means the world to us,” Hannah has shared in describing Liam’s journey. “He is resilient, strong and brave.”

The 32-year-old mother has also reflected on how motherhood has changed her understanding of hope and happiness.

“This is not the life I imagined, but it is more beautiful than I dreamed,” she said.

For Hannah, Liam’s progress is not about comparing him with other children. It is about celebrating his own pace, recognizing every new skill and appreciating the determination he shows along the way.

His journey has involved major surgery, ongoing therapy and the uncertainty of living with a permanent neurological condition. Yet it has also brought moments of joy that his family treasures deeply.
