MOM PREPARES TO SAY GOODBYE TO BABY BORN AT 24 WEEKS—THEN CAME THE TURNING POINT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

When Sydney Files held her baby boy for the first time, she never imagined it might also be the last.

Cooper was born at just 24 weeks and four days, weighing only a tiny fraction of what a full-term baby would. His arrival followed a difficult pregnancy after doctors discovered that Sydney’s placenta was not providing enough nutrients for him to grow.

At 23 weeks, Sydney was diagnosed with preeclampsia and placed on strict hospital bed rest. Just one week later, Cooper’s heart rate suddenly dropped, and doctors performed an emergency C-section.

On July 15, at 3:59 p.m., Cooper entered the world — and immediately began his fight.

He was intubated and taken to the NICU, where his fragile lungs became his biggest challenge. At just 10 days old, his condition became ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal, leaving his parents facing one of the most frightening moments of their lives.

“We held him close and prayed for a miracle,” Sydney recalled. “We didn’t know what the next day would bring, but Cooper kept fighting.”

And fight he did.

Over the months that followed, Cooper underwent a G-tube procedure to help him feed and later received a tracheostomy to support his breathing while his lungs continued to mature.

Then came another frightening setback.

After being transferred to the PICU, Cooper experienced a severe medical crisis and required resuscitation. Doctors investigated further and discovered a hole in his heart measuring around half an inch. During a cardiac catheterization procedure, they successfully closed the opening with a device.

For his family, every milestone — no matter how small — became something worth celebrating.

“Some days are incredibly hard, but every little step forward reminds us how far he has come,” his mother shared. “We’ve learned to celebrate the moments we once took for granted.”

Today, at 15 months old, Cooper remains in the PICU and continues to face challenges with his breathing and infections. Yet his progress has given his family new hope.

His development is going well, and his care team believes he may be strong enough to have his trach removed around the age of three.

Sydney knows the road ahead may still be long, but she refuses to define her son by everything he has been through.

“He has already shown us that his beginning does not have to determine his future,” she said. “We just want Cooper to keep growing, keep smiling, and one day experience the ordinary childhood we have always dreamed of for him.”

From a tiny newborn whose first cuddle seemed as though it might be his last, Cooper has become a little boy who continues to surprise everyone around him.
