UPDATE: Wade Wilson Case Takes Another Turn as Fresh Attention Returns to the Man Known as the “Deadpool” Namesake

The case of Wade Steven Wilson, the Florida man widely referred to online as the “Deadpool 𝘬iᩚll” because he shares his name with Marvel’s fictional character, has once again attracted international attention. More than two years after Wilson was sentenced to dєatᩚh, his legal case remains active, while new documentaries and renewed media coverage have brought the story back into the spotlight.
Wilson was convicted in 2024 in connection with the 2019 killings of Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43, in Cape Coral, Florida. A Lee County jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in June 2024. The jury later recommended dєatᩚh sentences, and Circuit Judge Nicholas Thompson formally imposed two dєatᩚh sentences on August 27, 2024.
However, the sentencing did not mark the end of the case. Under Florida law, dєatᩚh-penalty cases receive mandatory review by the Florida Supreme Court. Wilson’s appeal was docketed as Wade Steven Wilson v. State of Florida, Case No. SC2024-1345, on September 16, 2024. The official Florida court record currently lists the case as open.
A major legal issue moved to the Florida Supreme Court
One of the central issues raised by Wilson’s attorneys concerns Florida’s 2023 dєatᩚh-penalty law.
When Wilson committed the crimes in October 2019, Florida’s dєatᩚh-penalty procedure differed from the law in effect when he was sentenced. The newer law allows a jury to recommend a dєatᩚh sentence without a unanimous vote, provided the required threshold is reached.
In Wilson’s case, jurors voted 9–3 in favor of dєatᩚh for Melton and 10–2 for Ruiz. Those recommendations were subsequently followed by the judge’s two dєatᩚh sentences.
Wilson’s appellate lawyers challenged the application of the newer law to his case, arguing that the legal change should not have been applied to crimes committed in 2019. The appeal raises several issues concerning his convictions and sentences, according to the Florida court system.
The Florida Supreme Court held oral arguments in the case on February 5, 2026. The Florida Channel’s official archive identifies the proceeding as a direct appeal involving seven issues related to Wilson’s dєatᩚh sentences.
Court TV reported that Wilson’s attorney told the Florida Supreme Court that the defense intended to preserve its constitutional arguments for possible review by the U.S. Supreme Court. The legal dispute therefore remains significant even after the original trial concluded.
Importantly, the Florida Supreme Court’s public case record does not currently show the case as closed. The latest docket entry displayed by the court is an order dated May 7, 2026, granting the withdrawal of one of Wilson’s attorneys as co-counsel.
Why is Wade Wilson back in the headlines?
The renewed attention in 2026 is not coming solely from the courtroom.
Wilson’s case has become the subject of multiple true-crime productions, bringing the story to a new international audience. Paramount+ released the three-part documentary series “Handsome Devil: Charming 𝘬iᩚll” in January 2026. The production examines Wilson’s arrest, trial, dєatᩚh sentence and the unusual social-media attention surrounding him.
Paramount+ describes the documentary as an examination of how Wilson became a social-media fixation after his arrest. The series includes interviews, police footage and other material connected to the investigation and trial.
Then, in May 2026, Netflix brought the case to another large audience through Season 2 of “Worst Ex Ever.” Netflix’s official Tudum coverage identifies the first episode as “Dating the Deadpool 𝘬iᩚll” and explains that the season revisits Wilson’s story alongside other true-crime cases.
The renewed coverage has also focused on people connected to Wilson’s past and on questions surrounding how his earlier relationships and encounters with law enforcement were handled.
For example, People reported in 2026 on the account of Kelly Matthews, who had previously been in a relationship with Wilson. Her story became part of the Netflix documentary and prompted renewed discussion about an earlier investigation involving Wilson.
These documentaries have effectively reopened public discussion around a case that had already received enormous attention during the 2024 trial.
The nickname has complicated the public conversation
The “Deadpool 𝘬iᩚll” nickname did not come from the Marvel franchise. It developed because Wilson shares the same first and last name as Wade Wilson, the fictional alter ego of the Marvel character Deadpool.
That coincidence became a major part of the online identity surrounding the real-life defendant.
During and after the trial, photographs of Wilson circulated widely online, particularly images showing his extensive facial tattoos and courtroom appearances. The unusual combination of his name, appearance and the serious criminal case generated significant online fascination.

That unusual online response remains one of the most discussed aspects of the story.
Where the case stands now
As of September 19, 2026, Wilson remains on Florida’s dєatᩚh row, and there is no publicly announced execution date identified in the current Florida Supreme Court docket or the recent reporting reviewed for this article. His case remains listed as open under Case No. SC2024-1345.
The distinction is important: being sentenced to dєatᩚh does not mean an execution is imminent. The appellate process continues after sentencing, and Wilson’s case has already gone through oral arguments before Florida’s highest court.
His current legal position is therefore different from the situation in August 2024. The trial and sentencing have concluded, but the judicial review of the dєatᩚh sentences has not reached a final conclusion according to the court’s current public docket.
Meanwhile, documentaries released in 2026 have ensured that the case remains part of the international true-crime conversation.
For the families of Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz, however, the case is not simply a viral story or documentary subject. Their names remain at the center of the legal proceedings and the events that brought Wilson before the courts in the first place.
The latest chapter is now being written through the appellate process rather than another trial. Whether the Florida Supreme Court ultimately changes or leaves the sentences in place remains a matter for the court. For now, the official record shows an ongoing appeal, no publicly announced execution date, and a defendant whose case has once again become highly visible because of renewed media attention.
