FOUR MEN BROKE INTO A NOTTINGHAM HOME — ONE INTRUDER DIED AS THE HOMEOWNER WAS CLEARED

A planned nighttime burglary in Nottinghamshire ended with one of the four intruders ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and the homeowner facing no criminal charges after prosecutors concluded that he had acted lawfully to protect himself, his partner and his home.

The incident happened on February 25, 2025, at a mobile home off Lodge Lane Industrial Estate in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire. Taylor Green, 22, was part of a group of four men who entered the property during the attempted raid.

According to prosecutors, the group believed the occupant was keeping a substantial amount of cash and valuables. The men arrived masked and armed before forcing their way inside while the homeowner, Ethan Arnold, and his partner were in bed.

The court heard that the intruders demanded money and that the confrontation quickly became violent. Arnold took a knife from the bedroom and confronted the men as he tried to protect himself and his partner.

During the struggle, Green was fatally injured. The other intruders fled the property without obtaining the money they had reportedly been seeking.

Arnold was initially arrested as police investigated Green’s dєatᩚh. However, prosecutors ultimately decided that no charges should be brought against him because he had been defending himself, his partner and his property from four masked intruders who had forcibly entered his home.

The legal consequences instead fell on the surviving members of the burglary group.

David McCandless, 44, and Mason Meanwell, 25, were convicted of manslaughter after prosecutors argued that their decision to participate in the armed burglary created the dangerous circumstances that led to Green’s d#ath. Both men were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on July 3, 2026, to 12 years and six months in prison.

The fourth member of the group has not been identified, and Nottinghamshire Police said investigators had been unable to find sufficient evidence to prosecute that person.

The case illustrates a difficult question in English law: when someone is confronted inside their own home, the law can allow them to use reasonable force to protect themselves or others. Government guidance states that people do not have to wait until they are attacked before defending themselves, although the force used must remain reasonable in the circumstances.

In this case, prosecutors concluded that Arnold’s actions fell within lawful self-defence. The two men later convicted of manslaughter were held responsible because the fatal confrontation arose from the burglary they had planned and carried out.

What began as an attempt to steal money therefore ended with a 22-year-old father of three d#ead, two accomplices sentenced to lengthy prison terms, a fourth man still unidentified — and the homeowner cleared of criminal wrongdoing.
