Speaking to Téléfoot, former France captain Hugo Lloris (36) has backed Kylian Mbappé (24) to succeed him as captain of Les Bleus.
Lloris is France’s most-capped player of all time. The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper overtook Lillian Thuram’s previous record of 142 caps during the recent FIFA World Cup in Qatar, during which France reached the final. However, just after the tournament, Lloris announced his retirement from the national team.
Didier Deschamps is taking his time in naming his new captain, but he will have to do so soon with the qualifiers for the UEFA European Championships approaching. Despite being just 24 years old, Mbappé is one of the favourites to inherit the armband, and according to sources contacted by Get French Football News, the Paris Saint-Germain forward is in pole position to be the next France captain. Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann is also in contention.
Asked who he believed should become France’s next captain following his international retirement, Lloris replied, “There is one player that is becoming more powerful in every aspect on and off the pitch and even in the functioning of the dressing room – it’s Kylian Mbappé.” Mbappé has received another considerable nomination in the fight to become France’s new captain.
