ONE LAST SONG, ONE FINAL VICTORY — SIR TOM JONES SAYS GOODBYE TO THE VOICE UK AS CATE McHUGH CLAIMS THE CROWN

ONE LAST SONG, ONE FINAL VICTORY — SIR TOM JONES SAYS GOODBYE TO THE VOICE UK AS CATE McHUGH CLAIMS THE CROWN

It was supposed to be a night celebrating a new singing champion. Instead, the 2026 final of The Voice UK became an emotional farewell to one of the most recognisable faces in British television.

At 86, Sir Tom Jones took his final bow as a full-time coach on the ITV singing competition, and he did so in unforgettable fashion.

His contestant, Welsh singer Cate McHugh, was crowned the winner of the 2026 series, giving the legendary musician his fourth coaching victory.

But it was what happened next that made the evening particularly special.

Standing beside his winning contestant, Tom joined Cate for a moving performance of John Denver’s classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.

Their voices came together in a moment that celebrated not only a competition victory but also a remarkable musical journey between two Welsh performers.

For many viewers, it felt like the perfect goodbye.

Cate McHugh, 31, from Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, had worked for years to establish herself as a professional singer.

Her musical journey began long before television audiences discovered her.

At just 16, she started busking on Queen Street in Cardiff, performing for passers-by and developing the confidence that would eventually take her to a national stage.

She later spent around five years singing aboard cruise ships, entertaining audiences and gaining valuable performance experience.

But her journey also came with personal challenges.

Cate lives with Stargardt disease, a degenerative eye condition that has significantly affected her central vision. She is registered blind.

Rather than allowing her condition to define what she could achieve, she continued pursuing her musical ambitions.

When she appeared for her blind audition on The Voice UK, she performed “Die With a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.

Sir Tom Jones was the coach who turned his chair for her.

That single decision changed the course of her competition journey.

Throughout the competition, Tom guided Cate through the different stages of the show.

She progressed through the Battles, delivered a memorable performance of Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” in the semi-final and secured her place in the grand final.

By then, she had become one of the standout contestants of the series.

In the final, Cate performed The Beatles’ “Blackbird”, demonstrating the emotional depth and vocal control that had impressed her coach from the beginning.

Then came the duet.

ONE LAST DUET: TOM AND CATE SING TOGETHER

For their final performance together, Sir Tom and Cate chose John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.

The song carried an especially meaningful connection because both singers came from South Wales.

Tom was born in Pontypridd, while Cate grew up in the Vale of Glamorgan.

As they stood together on stage, the performance became more than a traditional coach-and-contestant duet.

It was a celebration of their shared Welsh roots, their musical connection and the journey that had brought them to that moment.

Tom’s unmistakable voice blended with Cate’s expressive vocals, creating one of the evening’s most memorable performances.

For viewers who had followed Tom throughout his years on the programme, seeing him share the stage with his final winning contestant made the moment even more emotional.

CATE McHUGH IS CROWNED THE WINNER

After the final performances, Cate was announced as the winner of The Voice UK 2026.

Overwhelmed by the result, she struggled to contain her excitement.

“Thank you, I did it,” she said.

Her victory earned her a £50,000 cash prize, a recording contract with Universal Music Group and a holiday to Universal Orlando Resort in Florida.

It was the culmination of years of hard work, determination and a lifelong love of music.

For Tom, it was also a fourth victory as a coach, following his previous successes with Leanne Mitchell, Ruti Olajugbagbe and Anthonia Edwards.

Few could have imagined a more fitting result for his final full-time series.

WHY IS SIR TOM JONES LEAVING THE VOICE UK?

Although the finale celebrated his success, Tom’s departure has also raised questions about ITV’s decision.

The legendary singer had been part of The Voice UK since the programme first launched in 2012, missing only one series.

However, he revealed in September that leaving the coaching panel was not his choice.

Tom explained that ITV had made the decision and that the reason initially given to him involved financial difficulties relating to insurance.

He also questioned the broadcaster’s later explanation that the programme needed a refreshed coaching line-up.

In a statement, he made clear that he loved The Voice and had not wanted to leave.

He was offered the possibility of a reduced role, but indicated that he was unhappy with the arrangement.

ITV thanked him for his years on the programme, praising the unforgettable moments and encouragement he had given contestants.

The broadcaster also confirmed that discussions about possible future involvement were continuing.

FANS SAY THE SHOW WILL NEVER BE THE SAME

Following the final, viewers took to social media to share their reactions.

Many congratulated Cate on her victory while also expressing sadness about Tom’s departure.

Some questioned why ITV would move on from a coach who had just secured another winning contestant.

Others described him as the heart and soul of the programme and thanked him for helping discover and support new singers.

For many longtime viewers, Tom was more than a familiar face sitting in a red chair.

His experience, humour, warmth and unmistakable voice had become part of the show’s identity.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE VOICE UK

The next series will bring major changes to the ITV competition.

Sir Tom Jones, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones will no longer be part of the regular coaching panel.

Cheryl and Aitch are set to join returning coaches will.i.am and Kelly Rowland for the next series.

Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon are also expected to take over presenting duties.

The programme is preparing for a new era, but the 2026 final has given audiences one last opportunity to celebrate the contribution of its longest-serving coach.

A FAREWELL WORTH REMEMBERING

For Cate McHugh, the night marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her music career.

For Sir Tom Jones, it was a final full-time appearance that ended with another trophy and a contestant he had believed in from the very first audition.

Their final duet was a reminder that music can bring generations together and create memories that remain long after the lights go down.

Tom may be leaving his regular place in the red chair, but his influence on the singers he has mentored will continue.

And as Cate begins her journey as the newest Voice UK champion, she will always be able to say that her first major television victory came with a little help from a Welsh music legend.

One final song. One final victory. And a farewell that fans will remember for years to come.
