A Father’s Journey to London Ended in Horror — The Tragic Murder of Lee Pomeroy on a Train

Lee Pomeroy was looking forward to a simple journey with his son.

The 51-year-old father had boarded a train from London Road station in Guildford on January 4, 2019, planning to travel to London just one day before his birthday.

It was meant to be an ordinary father-and-son trip.

Instead, it became a devastating moment that would forever change two families.

Darren Pencille was later sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Lee Pomeroy during the train journey.

On July 12, 2019, the court imposed a minimum term of 28 years, reduced by the 185 days he had already spent on remand, meaning 27 years and 180 days would need to be served before parole could even be considered.

But behind the legal process was a heartbreaking story of a father whose life was taken away in front of his child.

The tᩚraɢedy began after a seemingly minor interaction inside the train carriage.

During the journey toward London, a brief delay occurred as passengers moved along the carriage.

The court heard that Pencille made an insulting remark during the moment.

The comment led to a disagreement between the two men.

Pomeroy, who was travelling with his son, wanted an apology for the way Pencille had spoken to him.

The disagreement continued as the men moved into another carriage.

A passenger recorded part of the confrontation on a mobile phone, while the train’s CCTV captured their movements before the attack.

What started as a verbal argument quickly turned into a fatal act of violence.

Pencille had brought a knife onto the train.

He pulled the weapon and attacked Pomeroy.

The assault lasted only moments, but the consequences were permanent.

Pomeroy suffered multiple injuries during the attack.

Despite efforts to help him, he died at Horsley station with his son beside him.

A journey that should have been filled with ordinary memories became the final moments of a father’s life.

After the attack, Pencille left the train.

The court heard that he collected his belongings and did not attempt to help the injured man.

Instead of seeking emergency assistance, he contacted his girlfriend, Chelsea Mitchell.

Mitchell later collected him and took him to the flat where they were living in Farnham.

The investigation revealed that Mitchell helped Pencille after the 𝘬iᩚlling.

She assisted him in cleaning himself and changing his appearance.

He shaved his beard, and Mitchell drove him to different locations around Surrey, including his flat in Bognor Regis.

As news of Pomeroy’s dєatᩚh spread, the pair searched online for information about the attack.

Following a police investigation and a major manhunt, both were arrested in Farnham during the early hours of the morning.

The court later found that Mitchell’s actions had delayed Pencille’s arrest, which investigators believed could have happened sooner.

The murder weapon was never recovered.

However, the court did not sentence Mitchell on the basis that disposing of the weapon was her responsibility.

During the trial at the Old Bailey, Pencille claimed he had acted in self-defence.

But the jury rejected his explanation and found him guilty of murder.

The sentencing judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, concluded that Pencille had been the aggressor throughout the confrontation.

The court considered evidence relating to his mєntal health but determined that it did not reduce his responsibility for the 𝘬iᩚlling.

Several factors were considered aggravating circumstances, including his previous violent behaviour and the fact that Pomeroy’s son witnessed the attack.

Alongside the life sentence for murder, Pencille also received a concurrent 12-month sentence for carrying the knife.

Because the sentence was life imprisonment, any future release would require a careful assessment of whether he still posed a danger to the public.

Even if released, he would remain subject to a lifetime licence.

Mitchell was separately convicted of assisting an offender.

She was sentenced to 28 months in prison.

The court considered her emotional dependence on Pencille but also took into account her previous convictions and the fact that she committed the offence while already subject to a community order.

For Lee Pomeroy’s family, the courtroom outcome could never replace what they lost.

His widow described the devastating impact of losing a devoted husband and father.

A family that expected to celebrate another birthday instead faced a lifetime of grief.

Those who knew Pomeroy remembered him as a loving father and a person whose life revolved around the people he cared about.

The tᩚraɢedy was not only the loss of one man.

It was the loss of future birthdays, family moments and memories that would never happen.

His son was forced to experience something no child should ever witness.

A normal train ride became a moment of unimaginable trauma.

The case remains a reminder of how quickly a brief confrontation can escalate into irreversible consequences.

A few words exchanged between strangers turned into a violent attack that destroyed multiple lives.

For Lee Pomeroy’s loved ones, the most important part of his story is not how he died.

It is how he lived.

He was a father.

A husband.

A loved family member.

And a man whose life ended far too soon.
