Brazil Rope-Jumping Case Turns Into Criminal Investigation After Safety Failure

The tragic rope-jumping incident involving 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas is no longer being treated as only an extreme-sport accident. Authorities in Brazil have moved the case into a criminal investigation after reports confirmed that Maria was released from Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, without being properly connected to the safety rope.

According to reports citing Brazilian investigators, three instructors were arrested and accused of homicide with “dolus eventualis,” a legal classification used when authorities believe a person understood the serious risk but proceeded anyway. Investigators said the instructors could not clearly explain who was responsible for attaching or checking the rope before the jump.

Maria had reportedly requested an “airplane style” jump, where instructors lift the participant before release. Video shared online showed bystanders realizing something was wrong moments before the fall. The case has drawn outrage across Brazil because the safety issue appeared to involve a basic step that should have been checked before any jump was allowed.

Police also said the group operating the activity was not authorized to run the rope-jumping event at the site.

The case now raises serious questions about responsibility, training, and oversight in extreme-sport operations. For Maria’s family, the investigation is not only about what happened on the bridge, but also about whether stronger rules could prevent another preventable tragedy.
