AIKEN COUNTY, South Carolina — A growing memorial of flowers, balloons, candles, stuffed animals, and handwritten messages continues to expand outside the home of 4-year-old Javeayah Harris, as neighbors, friends, and supporters gather to honor her memory following one of the most heartbreaking child abuse investigations in recent South Carolina history.

The memorial has become a place where members of the community have come together to grieve, pray, and remember the little girl.
Many visitors have left Minnie Mouse toys, children’s drawings, and personal notes expressing love and support for Javeayah while offering prayers for her extended family.
The investigation took a devastating turn after Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer announced that investigators recovered partial human remains from Cedar Creek Reservoir (Stumpy Pond) in Fairfield County.
DNA testing confirmed the remains were consistent with the biological offspring of Johmarea Harris and Michilae Herring, Javeayah’s parents.

Authorities said forensic evidence indicates deliberate efforts were allegedly made to destroy and conceal evidence after the child’s death.
Sheriff Sawyer said investigators believe corrosive chemicals and other methods were allegedly used before the remains were disposed of in the reservoir.
Because of the condition of the remains, authorities believe it is unlikely that additional remains will be recovered despite the extensive search conducted by local, state, and federal agencies.
Johmarea Harris and Michilae Herring remain in custody. Both have been charged with homicide by child abuse, and investigators have filed additional charges of destruction and desecration of human remains.

Herring also faces a charge of filing a false police report after authorities say Javeayah was falsely reported missing even though investigators believe she had already been dead for weeks.
Sheriff Sawyer described the investigation as one of the most disturbing and emotionally difficult cases of his career, thanking investigators, first responders, volunteers, and members of the public who searched tirelessly for the little girl.
He also praised the community for the compassion shown throughout the investigation and asked that people continue praying for Javeayah’s extended family.
While the criminal investigation remains active, the growing memorial outside Javeayah Harris’ home has become a powerful symbol of a community determined to ensure the 4-year-old is remembered not for the tragedy surrounding her death, but for the love and compassion that continues to surround her memory.
