What Remains Unresolved After the Opening of the Inquest: The Medical Report, the Barriers, and the Future of the March 2027 Hearing

The opening of the inquest into William Chapman’s dєatᩚh established a clear but limited set of facts. On 10 October 2026 the 24-year-old climbed two fences into the Land of the Tigers enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster and was approached by the male Amur tiger Altai. The physical contact that followed produced multiple traumatic injuries that rapidly caused his dєatᩚh. He was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene. The provisional post-mortem cause was recorded as multiple traumatic injuries and animal interaction. A fuller medical report detailing the precise extent of those injuries has not yet been completed; the widely circulated claim that he suffered twelve broken bones has never been confirmed by the coroner or by any evidence placed before the court. Samples were taken for toxicological analysis. The hearing, held on 15 October before Senior Coroner Nicola Mundy, was adjourned until 18 March 2027.

Several other matters remain open. The coroner asked that relevant CCTV from the park be preserved and that any previous visits by Chapman be identified. South Yorkshire Police have gathered witness statements from staff and members of the public who were on the raised walkway. City of Doncaster Council is conducting a statutory health-and-safety investigation into the licensing and physical security of the enclosure and has undertaken to share its findings with the coroner. The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched its own inquiry into the mєntal-health care Chapman received. The inquest heard that he had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous episodes of psychosis, that he was under adult services in Doncaster, and that he was regarded as highly functioning and independent with no care requirements. His family had expressed concerns about that contact and chose not to attend the opening hearing.

Altai, the tiger involved, arrived from a Norwegian zoo in February 2025 as part of a European breeding programme for the endangered Amur subspecies. Park statements confirmed he was uninjured and would not be euthanised. The attraction reopened on 16 October, six days after the incident, with the Land of the Tigers area included. Early visitors saw the animal eating on a wooden platform in an adjacent paddock. The park has continued to ᴀssist the investigating agencies and has said specialist support is available to staff. Flowers left at the entrance in the days after the dєatᩚh were later moved to a temporary memorial.

What the March 2027 hearing will ultimately examine includes the full sequence of events visible on CCTV, the adequacy of the two fences Chapman climbed, the precise nature and extent of the injuries he sustained, the role if any of his mєntal-health history and the care he received, and any findings from the council’s health-and-safety investigation. Until that hearing the confirmed public record is narrow: a 24-year-old man entered the enclosure of a roughly 200-kilogram male Amur tiger, sustained multiple traumatic injuries from the resulting contact, and died at the scene. The wider circumstances that led him over the barriers, the detailed medical consequences, and the insтιтutional responses that followed remain subjects for the investigations still under way and for the full inquest still to come.
