MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR αttαᑕk IN CANADA — A FAMILY’S WALK ENDS IN tᩚraɢedy

Bella Coola, British Columbia | November 5, 2026

A mother and her youngest daughter have been found dead after disappearing during what was expected to be a simple afternoon walk near their home in British Columbia, Canada.

The victims were identified by relatives as 48-year-old Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter, Selah Reed. Their deaths are being investigated as a suspected grizzly bear αttαᑕk, leaving their family and the close-knit community of Bella Coola devastated.

A walk that turned into a desperate search

Jenny and Selah reportedly went for a walk on Saturday, October 31, near the Snooka West Trail, a route familiar to both women and only a short drive from their home.

When they failed to return and family members could no longer reach them, concerns quickly grew. They were reported missing on Sunday, November 1, prompting a search involving police, conservation officers and local search-and-rescue teams.

Jenny’s remains were discovered on Monday, November 2. Searchers continued looking for Selah until Tuesday afternoon, when her body was also found in the area.

Investigators said evidence suggested a bear may have been involved. However, authorities have not yet confirmed exactly what happened or whether one or more bears were responsible.

A mother remembered for her art and compassion

Jenny had recently moved to Bella Coola to begin a new chapter in her life and pursue work as an art therapist.

She was a mother of four and a grandmother, remembered by relatives as a talented and creative woman whose life revolved around family, music, painting and the outdoors.

Her loved ones described her as an important presence in the family. She enjoyed playing guitar, singing, reading and creating art, and was passionate about supporting others through her work.

For those who knew her, Jenny was much more than her professional role. She was a mother, sister, grandmother and a source of love and connection within her family.

Selah was always close by her mother’s side

Selah, Jenny’s youngest child, was just 20 years old.

She worked as an educational assistant while continuing her studies. Her family remembered her as a gentle, quiet and creative young woman who loved ballet, art and hiking.

The bond between mother and daughter was especially close. Relatives said they shared many interests and regularly spent time together outdoors.

One family member described them as being “two peas in a pod,” explaining that whenever Jenny went hiking, Selah was right there beside her.

It was a closeness that made the news of their deaths even harder for those who loved them to comprehend.

The tᩚraɢedy has also reopened painful memories of a previous bear αttαᑕk in the Bella Coola area.

In November 2025, a grizzly bear attacked a group of elementary schoolchildren and teachers during an outdoor school activity. Eleven people were injured, including children and adults who required medical treatment. The incident deeply affected the local community, and the bear involved was never captured.

Now, less than a year later, residents are facing another devastating incident involving a suspected bear αttαᑕk.

Authorities continue investigating

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service is investigating the deaths and working to locate and capture any bears that may have been involved.

Officials have said it is not yet clear whether one animal or multiple bears were responsible. Any captured bear will be assessed. If an animal is determined to have been responsible for the fatal αttαᑕk, authorities say it will be euthanized in accordance with provincial wildlife-conflict guidelines.

Residents and visitors have been urged to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while the investigation continues.

A family left with an unimaginable loss

For Jenny and Selah’s family, the tᩚraɢedy is not simply a wildlife incident or a frightening headline. It is the loss of two people whose lives were deeply connected.

A mother who had recently begun building a new life in Bella Coola. A daughter who was still at the beginning of adulthood. Two people who shared a love of art, nature and spending time together.

They had set out for a walk on a familiar trail. They never made it home.

Their family is now left to remember the moments they shared and face a loss that no words can truly ease.
