CHRISTA PIKE SURVIVED TWO lєthaℓ INJECTIONS — NOW TENNESSEE’S NEW GOVERNOR-ELECT WANTS THE ELECTRIC CHAIR. COULD ANOTHER exє𝔠uti☉n ATTEMPT BE COMING?

After surviving an unprecedented exє𝔠uti☉n failure, Christa Pike is back in prison. But a new political chapter in Tennessee has raised fresh questions about her fate — and whether the state could try to execute her again.

On September 30, 2026, Christa Pike, 50, was taken to the exє𝔠uti☉n chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. She was scheduled to become the first woman executed in the state in more than two centuries.

But the procedure did not go as planned.

Pike received two doses of pentobarbital, the lєthaℓ-inje𝔠ti☉n drug Tennessee officials intended to use to carry out her dєatᩚh sentence. Despite the injections, she remained alive. Witnesses and her attorneys reported that she was still breathing and audibly snoring after the second dose.

The exє𝔠uti☉n was abandoned, and Pike was transported by ambulance to a medical facility.

Her attorneys later described the ordeal as medically unprecedented. They reported serious complications, including severe pain, injuries to her arm and a difficult recovery following the failed procedure.

The incident raised immediate questions about Tennessee’s exє𝔠uti☉n protocol, the medical care available inside the exє𝔠uti☉n chamber and how a procedure involving two doses of a lєthaℓ drug could fail.

In the days following the failed exє𝔠uti☉n, Pike remained under medical supervision.

According to her legal team, she experienced significant physical complications and required continued medical attention. Her lawyers also said they intended to pursue further legal action and continue seeking a commutation of her dєatᩚh sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

On October 10, her attorneys confirmed that Pike had been discharged from the hospital and returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, where she had been held before the scheduled exє𝔠uti☉n.

She was continuing to receive medical care in prison.

Meanwhile, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an investigation into what happened and halted the state’s remaining scheduled executions for the rest of 2026.

The failure also intensified scrutiny of Tennessee’s exє𝔠uti☉n procedures, particularly after another problematic exє𝔠uti☉n attempt involving dєatᩚh-row inmate Tony Carruthers earlier that year.

The controversy quickly became a political issue.

On October 1, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, then a Republican candidate for Tennessee governor, publicly called for the return of the electric chair as an exє𝔠uti☉n method.

In a statement responding to Pike’s failed exє𝔠uti☉n, Blackburn said:

“Christa Pike should have been executed long ago.”

She argued that the failed procedure had prolonged the suffering of Colleen Slemmer’s family and called for a thorough review of what went wrong.

However, she also made her position clear, declaring that Tennessee should bring back the electric chair and carry out executions swiftly.

She added that, as governor, she would take action to restore its use.

Blackburn went on to win Tennessee’s November 3 gubernatorial election, becoming the state’s governor-elect and its first elected female governor. She is expected to take office in January 2027.

Her election has brought renewed attention to her position on capital punishment and the future of Tennessee’s exє𝔠uti☉n system.

THE ELECTRIC CHAIR IS ALREADY PART OF TENNESSEE LAW

One important detail makes Pike’s situation particularly complicated: Tennessee has not completely eliminated electrocution as an exє𝔠uti☉n method.

Under Tennessee Code § 40-23-114, people who committed capital offenses before January 1, 1999, may elect electrocution by signing a written waiver giving up lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n.

Because Pike’s crime occurred in 1995, she falls within that category.

The law also provides for electrocution as an alternative if lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n is ruled unconstitutional under the specified legal conditions, or if the Tennessee Department of Correction commissioner certifies to the governor that the department cannot carry out a lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n despite making reasonable efforts.

That distinction matters.

The failed September 30 procedure does not automatically mean Tennessee can immediately switch Pike’s exє𝔠uti☉n method to the electric chair. The statutory requirements must still be satisfied, and the applicable legal procedures must be followed.

It is also important to distinguish Blackburn’s political pledge from an actual legal decision. Her election does not itself change Pike’s sentence, authorize a new exє𝔠uti☉n date or automatically establish which method would be used.

COULD TENNESSEE TRY TO EXECUTE HER AGAIN?

Legally, the failed exє𝔠uti☉n does not automatically cancel Pike’s dєatᩚh sentence.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s September 30 decision vacated a stay that had temporarily blocked the exє𝔠uti☉n from proceeding that day. However, that decision did not resolve every legal issue surrounding her case or establish that Tennessee could immediately schedule another attempt.

Pike’s attorneys have continued challenging her dєatᩚh sentence and seeking clemency.

Any future exє𝔠uti☉n would require the state to address the outstanding legal proceedings, comply with applicable exє𝔠uti☉n laws and follow the required procedures for setting a new date.

A change in administration could influence the state’s approach to executions, but it cannot by itself bypass those legal requirements.

As of November 8, 2026, no new exє𝔠uti☉n date for Pike has been announced.

THE CRIME THAT LED TO HER dєatᩚh SENTENCE

Pike’s dєatᩚh sentence stems from the January 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, Tennessee.

At the time, Pike was 18 years old.

She and two other teenagers, including her boyfriend, were involved in luring Slemmer into a wooded area near a Job Corps training center.

According to the prosecution, Slemmer was brutally tortured and m𝑢rdєred. The αttαᑕk involved repeated physical violence and a knife, and the crime shocked the local community.

Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to dєatᩚh in 1996.

Her case has remained in the courts for decades. Her attorneys have raised arguments about her age at the time of the crime, her history of childhood 𝘢bu𝘴e and the adequacy of the defense presented during the original sentencing proceedings.

Those arguments have been part of repeated efforts to challenge her dєatᩚh sentence and seek a different punishment.

For Colleen Slemmer’s family, the case has meant decades of grief and repeated attention to a crime that took their loved one’s life.

ONE FAILED exє𝔠uti☉n — AND AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Christa Pike’s case now sits at the intersection of a failed exє𝔠uti☉n, ongoing legal challenges and a changing political administration.

The state has not publicly announced a new exє𝔠uti☉n date. The investigation into the September 30 failure and the legal questions surrounding any future attempt remain significant.

Blackburn’s call for the electric chair has added another dimension to the debate, but political statements and legal authority are not the same thing.

For now, Pike remains alive and incarcerated, while Colleen Slemmer’s family continues to live with the consequences of the 1995 murder.

Could Tennessee legally attempt to execute Christa Pike again — potentially using the electric chair? The law leaves open certain possibilities, but no immediate second exє𝔠uti☉n has been authorized or scheduled.

The next developments will depend on the investigation, the courts and the decisions made by Tennessee officials in the months ahead.
