GONE TOO SOON: THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF NATHALIA GADELHA FILGUEIRAS, THE 20-YEAR-OLD PILOT WHO LIVED HER DREAM OF FLYING
At an age when most young people are only beginning to imagine what their future might look like, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was already building a life in the skies.
She earned her private pilot’s licence at just 17, before obtaining her driver’s licence, and went on to accumulate approximately 1,300 hours of flying experience by the age of 20.
For Nathalia, aviation was never simply a career choice. It was a childhood dream that grew into a remarkable professional journey.
But on November 1, 2026, that journey came to a heartbreaking end when the Learjet 60 she was serving as co-pilot aboard crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, 𝘬iᩚlling all nine people on board.
The young aviator who had worked so hard to make her dream a reality was gone at just 20 years old.
A DREAM THAT BEGAN IN CHILDHOOD
Nathalia grew up in Palm Beach County, Florida, in a family where aviation was already part of everyday life.
Her father enjoyed recreational flying, and some of her earliest memories involved accompanying him on flights in a small Beechcraft Bonanza.
Those experiences left a lasting impression.
According to her family, when Nathalia was around 12 years old, she announced that she wanted to become a pilot.
Her mother, Camila Corteleti, initially struggled to believe that her young daughter would pursue such an ambitious dream.
But Nathalia was determined.
She became fascinated by aircraft, airports and the freedom of seeing the world from above. What began as childhood excitement gradually developed into a serious commitment to aviation.
Her family watched as that early fascination became the direction she wanted her life to take.
SHE EARNED HER PILOT’S LICENCE BEFORE HER DRIVER’S LICENCE
In October 2023, Nathalia attracted attention from local media when she achieved something extraordinary for someone her age.
While still a senior at West Boca Raton High School, she earned her private pilot’s licence at just 17.
She had started ground school in 2020 and received support through the School District of Palm Beach County’s Aviation Academy.
At the time, she had accumulated 88 hours of flight experience.
Her achievement was particularly memorable because she had not yet obtained her driver’s licence.
In an interview with CBS12, she joked about the unusual situation.
“I definitely do brag because people say, ‘Oh, you can’t drive,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I can fly.’”
It was a light-hearted comment, but it reflected something important about Nathalia: she was proud of choosing a path that was different from most people her age.
For her, flying was not just an impressive skill. It was the beginning of the future she had imagined for herself.
FROM A YOUNG STUDENT TO A COMMERCIAL PILOT
Nathalia did not stop after earning her first licence.
She continued her aviation training, graduated from American Flyers and worked as a flight instructor before moving into commercial aviation.
Her family said she had accumulated approximately 1,300 flight hours.
By the time of the accident, she had been working as a commercial pilot for around nine months.
She was also pursuing the qualifications and experience needed to advance her career, with the ambition of eventually becoming an airline pilot.
Her mother remembered how impressed people were with her abilities and dedication.
“Everybody was so impressed with her. They hired her because they knew how good she was and how much she loved it,” Camila told the New York Post.
At only 20, Nathalia had already turned a childhood ambition into a professional career that many people spend years working towards.
THE FINAL FLIGHT FROM TEXAS TO THE BAHAMAS
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, Nathalia was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 travelling from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
The aircraft was carrying nine people in total.
At approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, the jet crashed in the Greenacres area of Palm Beach County, Florida.
The aircraft struck the ground near a residential neighbourhood and burst into flames.
Authorities confirmed that all nine people aboard had died.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board began investigating the circumstances surrounding the 𝔠r𝘢sh.
The tᩚraɢedy also shocked the local community, as the aircraft came down near homes and businesses. No fatalities or injuries were reported among people on the ground.
THE FINAL MESSAGES BEFORE THE 𝔠r𝘢sh
In the days following the tᩚraɢedy, Nathalia’s family shared a heartbreaking detail about her final moments.
Her stepfather, Thiago Corteleti, told the New York Post that Nathalia had sent a message to her boyfriend approximately ten minutes before the 𝔠r𝘢sh.
“She just said, ‘I’ve got turbulence, I’ve got ice,’” he recalled.
Air traffic control recordings also captured the crew discussing weather conditions, including turbulence and icing, before the aircraft entered a rapid descent.
The crew eventually declared an emergency.
However, investigators have not yet determined what caused the aircraft to 𝔠r𝘢sh. The weather reports and final communications are important parts of the investigation, but they do not by themselves establish the cause.
A MOTHER’S HEARTBREAK: “I KNEW A PLANE WAS GONNA TAKE HER AWAY”
Perhaps the most painful words came from Nathalia’s mother.
Camila spoke about the pride she felt watching her daughter pursue the career she loved, while also describing the fear that had always accompanied her daughter’s decision to fly.
“I knew that a plane was gonna take her away from me. I always knew it but I was so proud of her. I know she was living her dream,” she told the New York Post.
Her words reveal the complicated emotions of a parent who supported her child’s ambition but never imagined that the worst could happen so soon.
Camila also said that Nathalia would have celebrated her 21st birthday in January.
She was the middle child of three sisters, and her family now faces the unimaginable loss of a daughter and sister whose future had seemed so full of possibility.
NINE LIVES LOST IN THE FLORIDA 𝔠r𝘢sh
Nathalia was not the only person whose life ended in the November 1 accident.
The Learjet 𝔠r𝘢sh claimed nine lives, including pilot Jeff Gregory and seven passengers.
Among the victims were Austin technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children, Emma and Charlie, and Anita Maria Cetina, who helped care for the children. Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr were also among those identified.
The tᩚraɢedy has left several families grieving loved ones who had been travelling together on what should have been an ordinary flight.
Investigators from the NTSB are examining the wreckage, flight information and other evidence to establish what happened.
A DREAM THAT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras had achieved something remarkable before she had even turned 21.
She had earned her pilot’s licence at 17, built up approximately 1,300 flight hours and secured a professional role in the aviation industry.
Her dream had been to fly, and she had devoted years of her young life to making it happen.
Her story is also a reminder that behind every tragic headline is a person with ambitions, relationships, family and a future they were still working towards.
For her mother, the pride in seeing Nathalia live her dream will forever exist alongside the pain of losing her.
For those who knew her, she will be remembered as a young woman who dared to choose an extraordinary path and worked tirelessly to follow it.
She had so much more she wanted to accomplish. So many more skies she hoped to explore.
But even though her journey ended far too soon, the determination that carried her from a childhood dream to the cockpit of a commercial jet will remain part of her legacy.
Rest in peace, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras. You were only 20, but you had already touched the sky.
