“We’re Going to 𝔠r𝘢sh Into the Ground”: The Chilling Air Traffic Control Audio from the Florida Learjet That Killed Nine

Harrowing radio transmissions from the final minutes of a Learjet 60 flight on November 1, 2026, have given the public an unusually direct window into the cockpit as the aircraft, en route from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, entered a catastrophic dive over Palm Beach County. Co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, the 20-year-old from Boca Raton who had earned her private pilot license at 17 while still in high school, is heard reporting clear icing, moderate turbulence that bounced the jet hundreds of feet, and an outside air temperature of roughly minus 47 degrees Celsius. Minutes later the transmissions turn desperate: she declares a Mayday, states the aircraft is descending at 10,000 feet per minute, then corrects that the rate has climbed to 20,000 feet per minute, warns of an overspeed condition, and repeatedly says the plane is going to 𝔠r𝘢sh into the ground. In the same recordings, the more experienced captain, identified as 55-year-old Jeff Gregory, can be heard reciting the Lord’s Prayer as the situation becomes irreversible. The entire sequence from the last routine reports to impact lasted only a few minutes, ending around 12:50 p.m. local time when the jet struck Military Trail near Cresthaven Boulevard, creating a large crater and a fireball visible for miles.

The aircraft, a Learjet 60 operated as a private charter, had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom earlier that morning with seven pᴀssengers and the two pilots. Tracking data later showed a sudden loss of roughly 27,000 feet in approximately one minute before the signal ended. Family members of Filgueiras told reporters she had texted her boyfriend around 12:40 p.m. with the simple message that she had turbulence and ice; the accident occurred about ten minutes after that exchange. The co-pilot’s earlier career had already drawn local attention: she completed ground school starting in 2020, accumulated her initial hours through a high-school aviation program, and by age 20 held a commercial pilot certificate while logging more than 1,300 total hours. She had worked briefly as a flight instructor before joining charter operations. Her mother and stepfather confirmed both her idenтιтy and the fact that she had been flying commercially for about nine months, noting she would have turned 21 in January.

On the ground, the impact left a deep crater, scattered wreckage across the roadway, and thick smoke that rose above nearby homes and businesses, yet no one on the surface was injured. Palm Beach County authorities quickly secured the area while federal investigators arrived to document the site. The National Transportation Safety Board has indicated that the crew reported icing and turbulence shortly before the emergency, but the full analysis of the flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder, weather conditions, and aircraft systems remains ongoing.

Until that report is complete, the precise reason the descent became unrecoverable stays under review. What the audio has already made clear is the rapid escalation from routine weather reports to an unmistakable emergency, and the composure of a 20-year-old co-pilot who continued communicating until the final seconds.
