Furious parents confront neighbors after kids given potent psychedelic gummies in Halloween bags

These kids almost had an unforgettable Halloween trip — due to some allegedly irresponsible adults.

Two enraged fathers confronted adults in San Diego after they allegedly handed their Halloween-energized tykes mushroom gummies.

The friends took their kids trick-or-treating in Ocean Beach and noticed when they got home that their kids had iridescent bags with psilocybin-laced candy in them. One bag had about 5 grams of psilocybin in it, enough to send anyone on a nauseating trip.

So the two parents, Cameron Hunter and his friend Frank Carey, went back to the home they believed the kids got the mushrooms from and recorded their interaction.

“These all have drugs in them,” one parent says to a woman standing with an open “candy” bowl.

The woman feigned ignorance, saying, “I didn’t realize they were bad, I don’t know.”

“They’re psilocybin mushrooms,” one of the men says, “like, [they’re] kids.”

The candy package contains 10 500mg psilocybin gummies in a colorful package with a giraffe on it, including even a tropical flavor. The parents say it’s too similar to regular candy.

“The candy packaging resembled bespoke candy, so it was very similar to something you’d buy at a candy store,” Carey said.

Cary said he noticed the unusual candy as his young child walked away from the house.

“My 2-year-old went up and grabbed one and started walking away with it in his hand,” Cary told NBC San Diego. “I noticed the picture had a giraffe and words that looked like they were melting. I took it out of his hand and saw that there was a dosage on the front of it. Five grams, [then I ] flipped it around and read ‘psilocybin mushrooms.’”

The house has an unusual reputation in the neighborhood, the homeowner Shawn Barger said.

“I don’t know, everyone thinks it’s like the witch house or the dead house or the scary house or something,” Barger said.

He denied that the gummies belonged to him and his wife, citing that they were just too expensive to give out.

“I looked it up and they’re like 20 bucks a piece. It’s probably like $300 worth of gummies. I don’t have $300 to, like, spend to make myself look bad, you know what I mean. It’s ridiculous,” Barger said.

The parents both said they regret stopping by the house.

San Diego Police  Lt. Cesar Jimenez said they would have to test the gummies to see if they contain any drugs before anyone could face charges.

He commended the parents for accompanying their children, checking their candy, confronting the alleged mushroom-candy-giving perps, and contacting police.

The men have filed a police report with the San Diego Police Department. Police said they’re looking into the alleged crime.

California law labels the act of giving controlled substances to minors a serious crime. Furnishing a controlled substance to a minor can earn an offender years in prison and a felony on their record.

The investigation remains ongoing.
