A MOTHER’S FIGHT TO REMOVE HER DAUGHTER’S RARE FACIAL BIRTHMARK: LITTLE VIENNA’S CONGENITAL SKIN CONDITION LEFT HER FAMILY FACING A HEARTBREAKING SETBACK

At last, this mother could breathe a sigh of relief as the prominent birthmark on her little daughter’s face was successfully removed.

Vienna Shaw, now 2 years old, was born with a rare congenital melanocytic nevus on her forehead. This uncommon skin condition affects approximately 1 in 20,000 newborns. When Celine Casey first saw her daughter’s face, she felt as though something might have gone wrong during her pregnancy. From that moment, she hoped to have the rare birthmark removed so that her daughter could grow up feeling comfortable and confident in her own skin.

Although the birthmark did not affect Vienna’s physical health, her mother understood the potential impact it could have on her daughter’s emotional well-being as she grew older. What if other children became curious, made unkind comments or treated her differently because of the mark?

Her mother explained that, at times, the family had even tried to cover Vienna’s birthmark when going out in public.

“We would take our daughter out to play, but we noticed that people kept staring at her,” Celine recalled.

When the family approached a hospital hoping to have the birthmark surgically removed, they were disappointed when doctors declined their request. They explained that they could not proceed with the operation because they considered it a cosmetic procedure.

However, Vienna’s parents did not see it that way. As parents, they were deeply concerned that their daughter might face unkind comments from other children. Celine also worried that if they did not address the birthmark early, Vienna might one day resent them for not having tried to help her sooner.

Unwilling to give up, the couple decided to take matters into their own hands and ask the public for support. They launched a crowdfunding campaign and raised $52,000 within just 24 hours. However, hospital costs increased, leaving them needing another $27,000. After considerable effort and determination, they eventually reached their fundraising goal.

The disagreement between the medical team and the couple sparked considerable debate. Vienna’s parents wanted the birthmark removed through surgery, while the doctors declined their initial request. The surgeon’s position was that Vienna should be old enough to make her own decision about whether to undergo the procedure.

Following the disagreement, Vienna’s father, Daniel Brookshaw, expressed his disappointment with the surgeon’s decision. The doctors also recommended seeking a dermatologist’s opinion. The dermatologist agreed with the surgeon, explaining that the birthmark did not pose a threat to Vienna’s health and was not considered cancerous.

Now 2 years old, Vienna has successfully undergone surgery to remove the birthmark, leaving only a faint scar between her eyebrows. Her mother regularly shares updates about the scar and her daughter’s recovery on social media.

Celine revealed that, although the birthmark has now been removed, the family still needs to travel between cities for follow-up appointments. These visits allow specialists to assess how Vienna’s scar is healing and determine whether any additional procedures may be needed.

Birthmarks are skin markings that can develop for different reasons. Some result from clusters of blood vessels beneath the skin, creating red or purple patches that vary in size and shape. Others, including congenital melanocytic nevi, develop from clusters of pigment-producing cells. They can appear on different parts of the body, including the head, face, neck, arms and legs.

The exact causes of birthmarks vary depending on their type and are not always fully understood. Research suggests that genetic factors may contribute to some forms, while others arise from differences in the development of blood vessels or pigment-producing cells.
