Walter Koenig, Beloved as Star Trek’s Pavel Chekov, diᩚєs at 90

Walter Koenig, the actor who brought energy, humor, and a distinctive Russian accent to the role of navigator Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek series, has died at the age of 90. He pᴀssed away of natural causes related to old age on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at his home in North Hollywood, California, surrounded by his daughter and niece.

Koenig joined the cast of Star Trek during its second season in 1967. Series creator Gene Roddenberry wanted a younger character who could attract a teenage audience, and Chekov was introduced as the ship’s navigator. Although Koenig was only a few years younger than co-stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, his fresh-faced appearance and lively performance quickly made the character a fan favorite. He appeared in 36 episodes of the original series and later returned for six of the Star Trek feature films that followed.

The character’s thick accent became one of his trademarks. Koenig, whose father was Lithuanian and spoke Russian as a first language, based the dialect on his family’s speech. He later recalled that some Russian-language students would criticize the accent as inaccurate, but he remained proud of the authenticity he brought to the role. One of Chekov’s most memorable and intense moments came in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, when the character is subjected to a harrowing scene involving a Ceti eel. Koenig once joked that his epitaph might read, “Here lies Walter Koenig. He screamed good.”

Beyond Star Trek, Koenig found deeper creative satisfaction later in his career. In the 1990s he took on the role of Alfred Bester, a complex and often antagonistic telepath on the science-fiction series Babylon 5. He described the part as more fulfilling because the character actively moved the story forward rather than simply reacting to events around him. In later years he continued to appear at fan conventions, wrote books and screenplays, and even returned to voice Chekov in a 2023 episode of Star Trek: Picard. One of his final on-screen performances as the character came in a 2015 fan-produced film, where he specifically requested that Chekov be written out of the story.

Koenig was born in Chicago to Lithuanian immigrant parents. Shortly after his birth the family briefly lived in Europe before returning to the United States. He studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where his classmates included future stars James Caan and Christopher Lloyd. Early television roles included a small part in the first week of the soap opera General Hospital and a turn as a young Russian defector that helped put him on the radar for the Chekov role.

His personal life included both enduring partnership and profound loss. He was married for many years until his wife’s dєatᩚh in 2022. In 2010 his son, actor Andrew Koenig—best known for a recurring role on the sitcom Growing Pains—died by sᩚuᩚiᩚcide at the age of 41. Walter Koenig publicly acknowledged the pain his son had been experiencing.

Fellow Star Trek cast member George Takei paid warm tribute to his longtime friend and colleague, describing Koenig as more than just Chekov—a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend who genuinely appreciated the fans who had supported him for decades.

Koenig is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig, an actress, comedian, and screenwriter. His agent noted that the actor’s legacy extended far beyond his on-screen roles. Through countless convention appearances and personal interactions, Koenig shared kindness, wit, and a deep understanding of what Star Trek meant to its community of fans.
