Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff admitted during questioning by Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer that he hasn’t treated a woman with postpartum psychosis since the 1980s and 1990s.Defense attorney Kevin Reddington asked Saatthoff if he’d ever treated a woman with this condition.

He said he had in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Clancy’s defense is that she shouldn’t be held criminally responsible for strangling her three kids because she had postpartum psychosis and was hearing a voice telling her to carry out the heinous acts.

One of the many meds Lindsay Clancy had been prescribed in the four months before she killed her kids was a dose so low it would have been safe for a child to take, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff testified.

Clancy was on 10 to 20 milligrams of antidepressant Amitriptyline which was one of the lowest doses someone could be prescribed and was safe for kids, the psychiatrist said.

Part of Clancy’s defense is that she was misdiagnosed and overmedicated by healthcare providers, contributing to her severe postpartum psychosis.

Jurors have heard she was given 30 prescriptions for 13 powerful psychiatric medications from September 2022 to when she strangled her kids on Jan. 24, 2023.

Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, has begun grilling forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff — the final witness at trial.

Lindsay Clancy’s “preparatory planning” showed she knew right from wrong when she killed kids, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff said. The fact that Clancy searched the distance for the errands she would send her then-husband on during the killings, “that preparatory planning I thought was significant.”

She made sure there were no witnesses home, she concealed the crime and she executed the crimes during a short period of time — all of which showed she was aware of what she was doing.

“Throughout the day she was methodical, quite controlled and organized,” Saathoff said.

He said he thinks Clancy is criminally responsible for the crimes.

Lindsay Clancy “had control” when she carefully planned and executed the strangling of her three kids and a “very, very serious” suicide attempt, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff told the jury.

“Well in the small amount of time that Ms. Clancy had in the home without her husband, it was important in order to carry this out to do this quickly, methodically and the like,” Saathoff said.

“This is having no instructions as to how to do it but being able to execute those decisions including being able to get a phone call and return it to her husband in the process of all of this,” the doctor continued.

“That is surprising that she was able to accomplish all of this without any kind of direction or plan,” he said.

He said it showed “she had control of the sequence of what she was doing throughout.”

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff said that while Lindsay Clancy didn’t succeed in killing herself her attempt “was very, very serious” especially given she used three methods to try to kill herself.

“I truly believe that her suicide attempt was very, very serious,” the psychiatrist said. “Which was why she employed three different methods.”

Clancy cut her wrists and neck with a knife, she tried to overdose on pills and she threw herself out of a second-story window on a frigid evening dressed in light clothing, jurors have learned.

“The fact that the lacerations were not deep doesn’t meant she was not intending to kill herself with a knife,” Saathoff said.

The potential last day of testimony in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial kicked off this morning with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff back on the witness stand.

Clancy was wearing a beige long sleeve shirt and her long brown hair was flowing loose down her back. She sat somberly in her wheelchair at the defense table.

After Saathoff’s testimony the jury will be let go for the day so that the lawyers can prepare the jury instructions and closing arguments.

“We are going to finish the evidence today, we will then excuse you… then hopefully arguments [tomorrow],” Judge William Sullivan told the jury.
