A FAMILY CULT?—PSYCHOLOGIST REVEALS CHI-LLING THEORY ABOUT OHIO ‘HOUSE OF HORRORS’ WHERE 16 CHILDREN WERE FOUND LIVING IN FILTH

A family accused of subjecting 16 children to horrific living conditions at an Ohio residence may have functioned as a “single-family cult,” according to a psychologist specializing in coercive groups.

On June 30,  rescued 16 children from what officials described as a squalid, neglected home in Hamden, Ohio. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson stated that the children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years old, “looked like feral animals” and were allegedly living in conditions “.”

Four family members; Gary Siders Jr. , Gary Siders Sr., , and Elizabeth Siders — have each been hit with 16 felony counts of child endangerment. All four have entered not guilty pleas, and court records indicate they have sought competency evaluations.

One expert now believes the deeply troubling allegations bear striking resemblance to what is commonly referred to as a “single-family cult.

“This is a single-family cult,” organizational psychologist Daniella Mestyanek Young told the Vinton Jackson Courier.

Mestyanek Young, who has dedicated her career to studying cult dynamics and was herself raised in the Children of God sect, explained that a single-family cult, also known as a micro-cult, revolves around one family unit rather than a broader religious, political, or spiritual movement.

“The motivation can often just be power. Cults are always about exploitation,” she told the outlet. Drawing from her personal experience, Mestyanek Young explained that patterns of repeated pregnancies can often emerge in controlling family settings.

She pointed out that her own mother went through multiple pregnancies after becoming the wife of a Children of God member as a teenager.

“Isolated, tired, skinny, busy, and pregnant,” she described to the Courier, outlining the conditions.

Court documents reveal that Elizabeth Siders delivered her first child at 15, following her marriage to then-18-year-old Gary Siders Jr. in West Virginia.

Additional court filings show she subsequently gave birth to twins across several pregnancies. Documents indicate she delivered twins in February 2022, suffered a loss involving conjoined twins later that same year, before delivering twins once more in January 2024 and January 2025.

Officials reported that the 16 children discovered inside the Hamden residence ranged from 18 years old down to just 18 months old.

At a July 1 press conference, Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain characterized the property as a “disgusting scene,” noting that many of the children were deprived of fundamental education and essential life skills.

“The oldest child couldn’t write or spell her own name,” Cain stated.

He continued, “Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children.”

Attorney General Wilson noted that investigators were shocked by the conditions they discovered when they arrived at the property to execute an arrest warrant for Gary Siders Jr.

“It’s the type of thing that we’re not used to seeing here in America,” Wilson stated.
