Each day unveils increasingly disturbing details from the Ohio “House of Horrors” case, where authorities discovered 16 children, ranging in age from 20 months to 18 years, residing in appalling conditions. The children’s parents, Gary Siders Jr and Elizabeth Siders, together with the children’s grandfather Gary Siders Sr. and his wife Christina Siders, face 16 counts each of endangering children.
According to an Ohio Attorney General’s Office report, the children were all discovered in a single 12 foot by 12 foot room, “covered in insects and feces”. However, new information suggests the horrific urine-soaked environment the family inhabited may have persisted for numerous years.
Gary Jr and Elizabeth Siders wed in Mason County, West Virginia, in March 2008. Elizabeth Siders was 15-years-old at the time, though state law allowed marriages at any age with parental consent. Elizabeth is currently expecting another child, reportedly her 19th. Ohio birth and marriage records reveal that at least three members of the extended Siders family were marrie din their early teens.
British journalist Mary O’Connor has investigated the family’s history and uncovered some “extraordinary” information. Gary Siders Jr had met Elizabeth when they were both living in the same West Virginia trailer park, and her pregnancy was already quite far advaced at the time of their marriage
Mary, who is the Daily Mail’s senior US reporter, revealed on the Criminally Obsessed podcast that shortly after their marriage, the couple relocated to a three-bedroom residence in the small town of Cheshire, Ohio. Residents in the town told Mary that the Siders had been living in utterly deplorable conditions, but the full disturbing reality of the family’s circumstances only came to light after they had relocated.

A local Cheshire resident, Melissa Edmonds, told Mary that her brother and his wife had lived next door to the Sider family. While recent police reports indicate that the Sider children are now largely “non-verbal,” during their time in Cheshire they had reportedly spoken with neighboring children through their garden fence.
“The other thing that we found when we went there, ” Mary said, “was a local man at the property, and he said that the state the property had been left in when it was vacated was ‘astounding’ to him.
“There were piles and piles of children’s clothing left in an attic room, and the floorboards were just so soaked in urine that they had to relay the the foundations of the property.”children’s clothing left in an attic room, and the floorboards were just so soaked in urine that they had to relay the the foundations of the property.”
The house was “saturated” with urine to such an extent that major renovations were required before it could be let to a new tenant, local man Bruce Gullick said.

Mary continued: “After the family moved out, a neighbor had actually gone to tour the property to see about moving into it and they had described, you know, horrible conditions, and had told her that some of the doors had padlocks on them.”
Bruce Gullick had been hired to renovate the Cheshire home and told WSYX what he saw inside: “A lot of kids’ clothes in the attic stuffed away like someone was living up there,” he said. “The whole entire house was just urine, human and pet feces, so it was pretty tough.”
However, similar to the situation in Hamden, residents of the small, seemingly close-knit community appeared oblivious to what was happening nearby until authorities intervened.

With Elizabeth Siders giving birth to a child nearly annually over an 18-year period, including conjoined twins in November 2022 who sadly passed away shortly after birth, the family required additional space and relocated to the Ohmer Street residence in Hamden, Ohio four years prior.
But again, no-one in the community appeared to recognize the appalling circumstances in which the children were living.
The catalyst for the disturbing revelation was a separate public indecency probe by the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office, following allegations that Gary Jr had exposed himself.

On June 30, Vinton County deputies and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) agents arrived to execute the arrest warrant. Upon entering the severely deteriorated residence, they were stunned to find the 16 children.
Sheriff Ryan Cain, who headed the original operation, stated: “Nothing could prepare us, even in 22 years of law enforcement. Nothing could have prepared us to see the scene. I’ve never seen human beings live in that condition before.”
At present, Christina, Elizabeth, and Gary Siders Jr. are each being held on a $300,000 bond, while his father, Gary Sr. , has been released on bail on grounds of ill-health.
