Authorities have rescued 16 children – ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years – from a house in Ohio where they were reportedly living in “deplorable” conditions.

A search warrant for the property in Hamden in Vinton County was executed on June 30, and officers allegedly discovered the 16 children confined to a 12-by-12-foot room, alongside four adults who have since been arrested on multiple child endangerment charges.

Characterizing the evidence officers reportedly uncovered at the home as “beyond comprehension”, Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said: “I think if they would have waited another 24 hours, that there was a very high probability that we’d be dealing with a death or multiple deaths of these children.”

Elizabeth Siders, the mother of all 16 children, has been taken into custody, along with her husband Gary Siders Jr. , 36, her mother-in-law, Christina Siders, 66, and her father-in-law Gary Sr., 73, reports the Mirror US.

Indicating the children had potentially been confined to the room for at least four years, one law enforcement officer characterized what he witnessed as “pure evil”.

Upon discovery, the children were immediately taken to hospital, including two who were airlifted for treatment. One of the children was reported to be in critical condition.

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer emphasized this was an “intra-family situation” and not a case of human trafficking. He identified the suspects as the “grandma, grandpa, father and mother”.

Wilson confirmed the children were now in a secure environment and said: “They are currently in a good situation and are being protected.”

He explained the eldest child, now 18, remained included in the charges due to being considered developmentally still a minor.

In a disturbing update, Wilson stated: “Some of these children couldn’t even speak. It was terrible.”

The charges additionally allege the four defendants abused the children, causing “serious physical harm.”

Joel Potts of the Ohio Department of Children and Youth confirmed: “The kids are safe. They’re being cared for. They’re receiving treatments. We expect there will be a lot more services these children will need to address the traumas they’ve received. And some of these things they’ll probably be dealing with for life.”

The household of 16 children and four adults is understood to have lived in Vinton County for the past four years, though according to Wilson had been “clearly bouncing around”. He said: “They were pretty adept at keeping these kids out of sight and out of investigative eyes.”

Elizabeth Siders, mother of all 16 children, asked to be released from custody last week in a court filing obtained by WCMH. She indicated her desire was to be freed and reunited with her children, according to the filing.

Contending she had no prior criminal history and there was no evidence suggesting she would fail to cooperate with authorities, her lawyer, J. Thomas Stolly, submitted the request.

The court document said: “Through conversations with Counsel, the Defendant maintains that her principal desire [is] to reunite with her children. She understands that reunification of any sort is an impossibility if she does not appear before this Court,” it continued.

Stolly further contended Elizabeth Siders does not represent a flight risk, and had consented to wearing a GPS monitor, regularly reporting to her bond officer, and supplying the court with a fixed residential address.

He told WBNS the 33-year-old has just one priority, saying: “She did not ask when she was getting out of jail. She did not ask what a timeline was for her to get out of jail. She started asking about the kids.”

Elizabeth Siders was just 15 when she married Gary Siders Jr. , investigators learned, and she delivered their first child just two months afterward.

She had only “positive things to say about Gary” from behind bars, according to Stolly, who noted that the pair had always desired a “big family”.

However, Elizabeth’s brother, Jeremy Russell, alleged his sister had been “indoctrinated” while still a teenager. He posted on social media asserting Elizabeth had entirely “wrapped her life up due to indoctrination,” and maintained the severe psychological manipulation over her was “100 percent real.”

Other relatives have claimed Elizabeth ran away from home as a teenager due to a “difficult home life”.

She moved in with Gary Siders Jr. and his parents, Gary Sr. and Christina Siders, according to NewsNation.

Ohio authorities will also allocate $1 million in state emergency funding to Vinton County to deliver treatment and care for the 16 children.
