Manchester United would almost certainly have to sell a number of players in order to get France superstar Kylian Mbappe. The forward appears to be on his way out of Paris Saint-Germain, and the Red Devils may fancy their chances of attracting him to Old Trafford.

Mbappe has been placed on the market by PSG after entering the final year of his contract. The Frenchman has stated that he would not sign an extension to the contract, which expires in June 2024.

He has been left out of PSG’s pre-season travel to Japan while the club attempts to resolve his future. United have not been connected with a deal for the sensational striker.

However, a club of their size should never be written off. Only a few clubs in the world would be appealing to Mbappe, and United may be one of them.

They would be able to pay him the large salaries he would expect since they broke their own self-imposed ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ last week when Marcus Rashford signed a massive new contract. Finding a transfer fee that PSG would accept would be more difficult.

Mbappe’s value has not been disclosed by the Ligue 1 champions. Regardless of his contract position, it would most certainly be much in excess of £100 million, possibly closer to £150 million.

If United chased Mbappe, they would almost certainly abandon any chances of acquiring another striker. Rasmus Hojlund is their current top offensive target, and Atalanta want roughly £60 million for the young Danish international.

That money may instead be put towards a prospective Mbappe offer. United’s spending power this summer is limited due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

They would need to generate additional finances following the additions of Mason Mount and Andre Onana, both of whom cost more than £100 million. However, there are certain important assets that could entice large offers from elsewhere.

Harry Maguire could depart after losing his leadership. According to the Manchester Evening News, the England star is valued at £50 million, although a figure closer to £40 million would be more realistic, with West Ham among those interested.
