Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) is a prequel to the original Underworld series, delving into the origins of the centuries-long war between the Vampires and the Lycans (werewolves).

Directed by Patrick Tatopoulos, the film explores the backstory of key characters, including Lucian, the first Lycan, and the events that led to the fierce and bloody feud between the two species. Unlike the previous films, which are set in modern times, this prequel is set in the distant past, in a medieval world of castles, slavery, and rebellion.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans focuses on the rise of Lucian (played by Michael Sheen), the first of the Lycansโ€”werewolves who can shift between human and wolf form. It tells the story of how Lucian leads a rebellion against the ruling vampire aristocracy, led by Viktor (played by Bill Nighy), a ruthless Vampire Elder. The film explores themes of love, freedom, betrayal, and revenge, as Lucian fights to free his people from the oppressive rule of the Vampires.

Key Plot Points:
Lucianโ€™s Origins: The film opens by revealing Lucianโ€™s origin. Born as the first Lycan with the ability to shift between human and wolf form, Lucian is not like the wild werewolves that roam the forests. He is raised by Viktor, the powerful Vampire Elder, who sees him as a valuable weapon. Viktor uses Lucian to create a race of Lycans who serve as slaves and protectors for the vampire aristocracy.

The Vampire-Lycan Power Dynamic: In the Vampire Kingdom, the Lycans are kept in chains and forced to protect the vampire castles during the day, when vampires are vulnerable to sunlight. The vampires see themselves as superior, treating the Lycans as nothing more than slaves. The wild, feral werewolves (who cannot revert to human form) are hunted by both vampires and Lycans alike, representing a primal version of the Lycans’ existence.
