A chunky monkey in Thailand is getting a much-needed health cleanse.
The 3-year-old primate, aptly named Godzilla, had been spotted in the Min Buri district of Bangkok, where diners at a streetside eatery would gather to catch a glimpse of the massive macaque — and feed him junk food, naturally.
Footage obtained by Viral Press shows a leashed Godzilla slumped behind the market counter amid a pile of plush toys and a baby bottle filled with a milky substance.
Clocking in at more than 44 pounds, he is about twice the size of a typical adult macaque.
But this wasn’t just a case of him putting on a few extra layers during the pandemic, as other pets and humans have been wont to do.
Godzilla’s keeper, Manop, who runs the Min Buri food stand, reportedly exercises him daily — to no avail.
Manop told Viral Press that she had adopted the overweight animal after he was abandoned by his previous owner, who allowed Godzilla to become morbidly obese. But her failure to help the monkey slim down prompted her to send Godzilla to rehab for weight loss.
“The rescue team found Godzilla when he was very small,” said Manop. “And since he grew up being fed by humans, he does not know how to find food on his own in the wild.”
Godzilla’s appetite for junk food is insatiable, despite having all the healthy, fresh fruit he could want, according to Manop. He’s also known for being a tyrant, even when there’s food on the table.
“I bring Godzilla with me to the market where I can look after him. I don’t like him to be on his own because he gets stressed,” said Manop. “He only eats from people he likes. He’s very fussy and can get angry if he doesn’t like the person.”
By the looks of it, Godzilla must have more than a few people he likes.
