They say to expect the unexpected while driving and to always make sure to drive defensively. However, we cannot imagine how we would react if a creature was unexpectedly propelled into our window as this driver and passenger witnessed.
Latonya Lark was out running errands with her brother Kevin Grant on May 12 in Savannah, Georgia when a turtle suddenly came through the window.
The pair were traveling north on the Harry S Truman Parkway at the time.
The turtle could have caused major injuries to the driver and passenger, but it thankfully only pierced the glass and was stuck there.
“I thought it was a brick, and I told (my brother), ‘my God, there’s a brick!’” Lark told WSAV-TV.
Grant and Lark explained that they were driving when they suddenly heard a loud boom and felt shattered glass hit them.
“When the glass broke, the first thing that comes to my mind was just to shield myself,” Grant, a licensed cosmetologist, said.
There was not much else the siblings could do in the brief amount of time that they had.
“So it was just like, you know, turn and cover.”
Lark assumes that the turtle must have been hit by another passing car in front of them, and that the creature was thrown back to their windshield.
Lark and Grant pulled over immediately following the incident and called for help. The service vehicles had to tow the car because of how damaged it was in the accident.
“Even the police officer said if that glass wasn’t as thick as it was and I didn’t slow down the way I did when I saw the object coming, it would have been disastrous,” Lark later explained.
Officers at the scene removed the turtle from the ruined windshield. The animal was alive but lost one of its legs.
Lark called a few days later to check on the animal and sadly found out that it eventually died due to the amount of blood loss it suffered.
Lark now wants people to remember to pay attention to the road at all times while driving, especially at high speeds.
“If people are not paying attention to the road…you know, whoever hit that turtle, they had to have been flying,” she elaborated.
