Ligue 1 made fun of an FC Barcelona legend and he responds back which humiliates the French league.
Football banter is like other sports, which happens every day, comparing trophies, wins, and players. Yesterday, the Champions League draw came out, and all eight teams remaining found out about their path to the final at Wembley Stadium at the end of the season. On the left side of the bracket, PSG will be playing against FC Barcelona. Atletico Madrid will play against Borussia Dortmund, and the winner of these two match-ups will play each other in the semifinal. On the other side, Arsenal will play against Bayern Munich, while Real Madrid will play against Manchester City. The two winners of these fixtures will play each other in the other semifinal of the Champions League. Respect has already been shown across all the teams, but as always, there is also a lot of trash talk.
The PSG and FC Barcelona matchup has already been tense because of the past fixtures in the Champions League. FC Barcelona and PSG have faced three times in the knockout stages of the competition in the past decade. Barcelona won 5-1 on aggregate against PSG in 2015, where they played each other in the quarterfinals. In 2017, they played each other in the Round of 16, where the famous Barca comeback occurred.
PSG won the first leg 4-0, but in the second leg at Camp Nou, Barcelona won 6-1 to win 6-5 on aggregate. In 2021, the two sides played in the Round of 16 again, but PSG got the better of Barcelona this time. PSG won 5-2 on aggregate, and Ligue 1 took the opportunity to make fun of FC Barcelona legend Gerard Pique. Ligue 1 went on X to post a picture of Mbappé running past Pique and wrote, “And that’s how the Piqué’s Kings League was born.”
Pique’s reply includes comparing how many Champions League titles he’s won
Pique’s Kings League posted an image comparing how many Champions League titles Pique won compared to the entirety of Ligue 1. Pique won four Champions League titles compared to Ligue 1’s one. The only French team to win a Champions League is Marseille, which was won in 1993.
