Pep Guardiola’s legacy at Man City lives on as he handpicks a talented successor to continue the team’s success.

Pep Guardiola believes that Vincent Kompany will one day take his job and become Manchester City coach.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match against Burnley, Guardiola praised Kompany and the way he created an identity for the team.

Pep said: “Burnley is not an easy team to play against, they never give up. Today, we won because of the quality of players we have, not because we controlled everything or were better in every way. I feel like Burnley didn’t get the result they deserved.”

The Spanish strategist added: “Vinny will sooner or later end up here. I have a feeling that he will end up here. He is already a great coach when you see what he does.” He did last season with Burnley. You can see the ideas Burnley have, the way they try to defend. I like what he does.”

Kompany spent 11 seasons at Man City as a player, including eight seasons as club captain. In 2021, Kompany’s statue was unveiled at the Etihad Stadium.

The 37-year-old Belgian captain returned to Manchester to join Burnley to face Man City. However, with the superior strength of the home team, Burnley could not create a surprise.

Kompany has been in charge of Turf Moor since June 2022 when he returned to England after 96 games as Anderlecht coach. In his first season with Burnley, Kompany won the EFL championship with 101 points – only four teams have ever earned more points in a season in England’s second tier.

However, today’s (February 1) defeat left Burnley 19th in the Premier League standings – seven points behind Luton in 17th place. However, Kompany is adamant that his team can still survive.

Kompany is full of optimism: “That’s Burnley Football Club. That’s 101 points in the Championship last year. That’s six years of existence in the Premier League with certainly the lowest budget of all those years. We’ll find figure out a way, we keep grafting and going. The club has enough motivation to keep pushing itself. We certainly won’t give up on anything.”

According to the Guardian, Pep plans to leave Man City next year, when his contract expires. He does not want to prolong his tenure at Man City too long. Successors have certainly been considered by Man City. Kompany is also an option that cannot be ignored.
