The two top La Liga clubs are said to be interested in Mason Greenwood, a striker owned by Man Utd who plays for Getafe.
Real and Barca sent scouts to monitor Greenwood, according to British and Spanish media. The Camp Nou home team can accept to sell Raphinha to Man Utd in exchange for Greenwood with a sum of money. In the summer of 2022, Barca bought Raphinha from Leeds for 63 million USD.
Cadena Ser channel (Spain) said that Atletico, Valencia, Sociedad and Getafe, where Greenwood is playing on loan from Man Utd, also want to buy the English player outright. Getafe president Angel Torres said: “With Greenwood, we not only plan to keep him for another year, but also want to buy him outright. I have a lot of confidence in him.”
Man Utd loaned Greenwood to Getafe from summer 2023, on a one-year contract. After 15 games for the Spanish team, the 22-year-old English striker has scored five goals and assisted four times. Not only that, with his speed, youth and cunning, Greenwood also dominates the right wing, becoming an important part of the gameplay.
After Atletico drew 3-3 with Getafe in La Liga on December 19, even though Greenwood did not score or assist, home striker Antoine Griezmann still commented: “Greenwood destroyed us. We couldn’t stop him.” And that costs us.”
The last time Greenwood played for Man Utd was January 2022. Soon after, he was arrested for allegedly trying to rape and assault his girlfriend. Greenwood denied and the charges were later dropped by the British prosecution. After the incident, Man Utd intended to let the 22-year-old striker play again. However, due to the backlash from fans and female players, the “Red Devils” had to push Greenwood to Getafe.
After witnessing Greenwood regain his form in Spain, former Man Utd player Ravel Morrison called: “Greenwood is a great player. Man Utd must bring him back.”
Man Utd is still keeping silent. The team currently ranked seventh in the Premier League can wait until the summer to make a decision. Greenwood grew up as a student at Man Utd. He scored 35 goals in 129 matches for the first team and made his England debut in 2020.
