Nolan Wells Case: Newly Released Messages Reveal Friends Discussing What to Tell Police After His Disappearance

Newly released phone records have brought fresh attention to the case of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old whose disappearance from Mississippi’s Horn Island during the Fourth of July weekend ended in tᩚraɢedy. Messages recovered from his phone reportedly show how friends reacted as they tried to understand where he had gone—and how they might respond to questions from investigators.

According to a forensic analysis commissioned by Wells’ family, the nearly 300-page report examined conversations from 29 group chats, along with private Snapchat messages. Some exchanges reportedly began shortly after friends learned that Wells was missing, with participants trying to piece together his movements and identify who had last seen him.

One message reportedly described Wells leaving a boat at around 6 p.m. with another person and walking toward a different vessel. Other messages questioned why he might have left his phone behind and expressed concern that something was wrong.

The conversations became particularly controversial when participants discussed how to handle possible police questioning. One person reportedly advised the group to ask for a lawyer if questioned, adding that seeking legal representation did not mean anyone was guilty. Other messages urged people not to speculate and to stick to what they personally knew.

These exchanges have fueled further public debate, but their meaning must be considered carefully. Discussing legal representation or expressing confusion does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing.

A grand jury previously declined to bring charges in connection with Wells’ case. His family, however, has continued to seek answers and raise questions about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the investigation.

For those following the case, the newly released messages offer a glimpse into the conversations that took place afterward—but they do not independently establish what happened during Wells’ final hours.

The central question remains: Can the available records help investigators resolve the unanswered questions surrounding Nolan Wells’ disappearance?
