A Colorado Crime Lab Scandal Has Put Fresh Pressure on the JonBenét Ramsey Case Even Though Officials Say the Core Evidence Was Untouched

In June 2026, former Colorado Bureau of Investigation forensic scientist Yvonne “Missy” Woods pleaded guilty to four felonies connected to altering and deleting data in the laboratory’s DNA quality-control processes between 2008 and 2023. She was later sentenced to a decade in prison. The scandal has forced prosecutors across the state to re-examine hundreds of cases. It has also drawn renewed attention to the JonBenét Ramsey investigation, even though Boulder police and the Boulder County District Attorney’s office have stated that a review found Woods’ conduct did not affect the evidence in this particular case.

Primary DNA testing on the key items from the 1996 crime scene was performed by an independent outside laboratory, not by the CBI. Woods worked at the CBI beginning in 1994, but investigators have said her misconduct window does not overlap with the original testing performed on the Ramsey evidence, and her name does not appear on the early reports that have been publicly discussed.

John Ramsey has acknowledged that the core DNA sample from his daughter’s clothing appears to have been handled outside the CBI, yet he has continued to question why certain other items collected from the house were never fully tested or were examined only with older methods. He and other family members have long pushed for additional testing of items such as the garrote used in the ᴀssault, arguing that modern techniques could still yield usable profiles. The Woods case has intensified those calls for independent, outside-lab work and for the application of forensic genetic genealogy.

Officials have said they continue to consult with private laboratories about the feasibility of further testing on the extremely limited and complex DNA samples that remain. The scandal has not produced a public breakthrough in the Ramsey case, but it has added another layer of scrutiny to the handling of evidence in one of the country’s most closely watched unsolved homicides and has kept the question of what modern science might still extract from 1996 materials firmly in the public conversation.
