Pauline Quirke’s Son Shares Emotional Update on Her Dementia Battle: The One Precious Thing Her Family Is Determined to Hold On To

The beloved Birds of a Feather actress was diagnosed with dementia in 2021. Now, her son Charlie has offered a rare update on her condition, revealing how the family continues to cherish everyday moments together while holding on to the connection that means everything.

For the family of British actress Pauline Quirke, life has become a journey of appreciating the little things.

The 67-year-old actress, best known for playing Sharon Theodopolopodous in the popular BBC sitcom Birds of a Feather, was diagnosed with dementia in 2021. Her family publicly revealed the news in January 2025, explaining that she would be stepping away from acting and all professional commitments.

Since then, her husband, Steve Sheen, and their son, Charlie Quirke, have occasionally shared updates about her condition.

Now, Charlie has offered another glimpse into his mother’s life, revealing that despite the challenges of dementia, the family is still finding happiness in the moments they share.

‘Có thể là hình ảnh về một hoặc nhiều người, tóc vàng, râu và mọi người đang cườiEVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT’: CHARLIE SHARES AN UPDATE ON HIS MOTHER

Charlie appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on September 9, 2026, to discuss his involvement in a new campaign supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK.

During the interview, presenter Lorraine Kelly asked how his mother was doing, knowing how much affection viewers still have for the actress.

Charlie’s response offered reassurance to those concerned about Pauline.

“Mum, she’s great. Every day is different, it’s part of our journey,” he explained.

He revealed that the family continues to do as much as possible together, including going out for lunch and enjoying ordinary activities.

One particularly familiar family tradition is watching football.

Charlie even joked about making his mother sit through West Ham’s recent victory.

He also spoke about the importance of having a close family unit, explaining that their support for one another makes the difficult journey easier.

“Touch wood, she’s happy,” he added.

It was a simple but meaningful update from a son who clearly wants his mother to continue enjoying the best moments life can offer.

One of the most moving updates about Pauline came in November 2025, when Charlie appeared alongside his father on BBC Breakfast.

At the time, he revealed that his mother continued to recognise her family.

He explained that whenever relatives visited, Pauline would smile, laugh, greet them and tell them she loved them.

For Charlie, these moments were incredibly precious.

He described his mother as someone who had always been his best friend and explained that dementia had not changed the love between them.

Although the illness had brought uncertainty and emotional challenges, the family continued to treasure the affection and recognition she could still express.

Her husband, Steve, also spoke honestly about the uncertainty surrounding the progression of the condition.

He explained that the family did not know exactly what stage Pauline was at or how quickly things might change.

Rather than trying to predict the future, they had chosen to take each day as it came.

A DIAGNOSIS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Pauline’s family first became concerned in November 2020, when the actress began struggling to learn lines for an acting role.

Her husband later recalled that she contacted him after finding it increasingly difficult to remember the words in her script.

Initially, the family struggled to understand what was happening.

They considered whether her difficulties might be related to long COVID or another temporary health issue.

However, Pauline was diagnosed with dementia in 2021, when she was 61.

The diagnosis came as a tremendous shock to her loved ones.

In January 2025, Steve announced the news publicly, confirming that Pauline would retire from all professional and commercial duties.

He also praised her extraordinary career, her charitable work and her dedication to nurturing young performers through the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts.

For a woman who had spent decades entertaining audiences, stepping away from the spotlight marked a major change in her life.

CHARLIE IS TURNING HIS MOTHER’S STORY INTO A MISSION FOR HOPE

Rather than allowing the family’s experience to remain entirely private, Charlie has decided to use his mother’s journey to help raise awareness and support dementia research.

He has become an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Research UK and has spoken openly about the emotional impact of receiving a dementia diagnosis within a family.

In December 2025, he undertook an ambitious five-day fundraising challenge called Charlie Quirke’s Trek For A Cure.

The challenge covered approximately 140 kilometres across five counties, visiting locations connected to his mother’s life and career.

These included places where Pauline had lived, theatres where she had performed and television studios where she had worked.

The journey was more than a fundraising effort.

It was also a tribute to a mother whose career and dedication to helping others had shaped so much of his life.

Charlie explained that he wanted to continue the legacy she had created, particularly her passion for encouraging the next generation of young actors.

His work has helped bring greater attention to the challenges faced by families living with dementia and the importance of investing in research.

WHY THE FAMILY’S MESSAGE MATTERS

Dementia is a progressive condition that can affect memory, thinking, communication and everyday activities.

There is currently no cure for most forms of dementia, and the progression can vary considerably from one person to another.

For families, one of the hardest parts is living with uncertainty.

Charlie and Steve have both spoken about how difficult it can be to understand what lies ahead, especially when some days are better than others.

Their approach has been to focus on the moments they can still enjoy together.

A family lunch, a football match, a familiar smile or hearing someone say “I love you” may seem like ordinary experiences.

But for families navigating dementia, those moments can become especially meaningful.

A LEGENDARY ACTRESS, A BELOVED MOTHER

Pauline Quirke built an extraordinary career across British television, theatre and film.

She became a household name through Birds of a Feather, where her portrayal of Sharon made her one of Britain’s most recognisable comedy actresses.

Her performances in productions such as The Sculptress and Broadchurch also demonstrated her versatility as an actress.

Away from television, she devoted considerable energy to helping young people discover their confidence and creativity through her performing arts academy.

Today, her family is focused on supporting her through a very different chapter of life.

Charlie’s latest update offers a reminder that, even as dementia changes everyday routines, the love between family members remains deeply important.

The illness may bring uncertainty, but the family continues to make room for laughter, shared meals and familiar traditions.

And perhaps the most precious thing they are determined to preserve is not a particular memory or a television appearance.

It is the connection they still share with the woman they love.

For Charlie, she will always be his mother and his best friend.
