PART 1: I heard my seven-year-old daughter say

I heard my seven-year-old daughter say, “Daddy said it was medicine, but he told us never to tell Mommy,” while her twin doubled over beside her, clutching his stomach. The officer scanned the syringe she had hidden in her shoe, checked the prescription record, and quietly told another officer, “Do not let their father through that door.”

The paper beneath my son crinkled every time he pulled his knees тιԍнтer against his chest. The room smelled sharply of sanitizer, and my daughter stood beside me with one sneaker half off, staring at the syringe as if she wished she had never found the courage to bring it.

I wanted to ask twenty questions. I asked one.

“Sweetheart, did Daddy give that to you?”

She looked at her brother before she looked at me. “He said we needed it.”

My son squeezed my hand harder.

The officer crouched so he wasn’t towering over her. He didn’t tell her what to say. He didn’t offer a theory. He simply asked her to tell him what happened from the beginning, in her own words.

She said their father had called it medicine. She said he warned them that I would get angry if I knew. She said the syringe scared her, so when she got a chance, she slipped it into her shoe instead of leaving it behind.

That part broke something in me.

Not because she had hidden it. Because at seven years old, she had decided she needed to preserve something an adult had ordered her to keep secret.

The officer stood and checked the record again. Then he turned the screen slightly away from the children and told me the one fact I needed to understand immediately: the prescription attached to what he was checking was under their father’s name, not either child’s.

My mouth went dry.

“Then why would he give it to them?” I asked.

The officer didn’t guess.

He said, “Right now, we’re making sure your children are safe. Everything else comes after that.”

That sentence kept me from doing something stupid. I stopped thinking about confronting their father. I stopped thinking about explanations. I sat beside my son, kept my daughter close, and answered every question I was asked as plainly as I could.

My daughter kept rubbing the toe of the shoe where she’d hidden the syringe.

She rubbed it once. She rubbed it twice. She rubbed it again, then whispered, “Am I in trouble?”

“No.” I pulled her against me. “You told me the truth.”

Her shoulders finally dropped.

My son didn’t relax.

An officer asked whether their father knew where we were. I said I didn’t know. The second officer moved into the hallway anyway and stayed near the door.

Minutes pᴀssed strangely after that. Every sound seemed too loud—the wheels of a cart somewhere outside, shoes crossing the hall, my son’s uneven breathing. My daughter wouldn’t let go of my sleeve.

Then she asked me something I wasn’t ready for.

“Are we going back with Daddy?”

I looked toward the officer because I was terrified that whatever I said might make her stop talking.

He answered before I had to.

“Not right now.”

My daughter nodded once and leaned against me.

A voice suddenly carried from the hallway.

“I’m their father.”

My daughter’s fingers locked around my arm.

The officer at the door shifted immediately. The other one took the syringe farther from the children and stepped between us and the entrance.

The voice came closer.

“I said I’m their father. I need to see my kids.”

My son opened his eyes. My daughter backed into my side.

Then the hallway door swung open, and their father strode straight toward us.
