Within hours of the call that a three-year-old had run from the Merriam Close playground and disappeared down the path toward the new estate, the search for Noah Woods drew volunteers from the village itself, from neighbouring East Bergholt, from Manningtree across the EsSєx border, and from distances as far as Birmingham and Hampshire. By the time the Metropolitan Police dive team entered Decoy Pond on the afternoon of 16 September, Suffolk Police recorded that at least 1,300 members of the public had taken part alongside specialist units, dog teams, the National Police Air Service, HM Coastguard, and Suffolk Fire and Rescue. Helicopters had flown the banks of the River Stour and the wooded margins; searchers had checked sheds, gardens, and the new housing estate itself. Superintendent Tom Pearse described an overwhelming response in which people put on boots and joined the line.

The pond, roughly 320 metres from the playground, had already been cordoned once the direction of travel became clear. Divers found the body five metres from the edge, caught among submerged tree roots at a depth of about 1.8 metres. dєatᩚh was confirmed at 16:31 by the attending paramedics; the formal identification by the boy’s mother followed at the hospital that evening. In the days afterward the father, Rhys Woods, wrote publicly that the family had kept telling themselves the child might still be hiding somewhere obvious and that someone would simply find him.

The scale of the turnout, he said, showed that Noah had been taken into the hearts of people far beyond the village. The search had included the areas immediately adjacent to the open gate and the path, the woods, and the water itself once the decision was made to deploy divers. No indication of third-party involvement or criminality was reported at any stage; the investigation has remained classified as non-suspicious. The community effort continued until the recovery, after which tributes and flowers appeared at the playground and a fundraising appeal for the family rapidly surpᴀssed tens of thousands of pounds. The inquest opening on 25 September confirmed the timeline of the volunteer response and the location of the find, yet left the precise sequence between loss of sight and the final position in the pond for later examination. What remains documented is the speed with which ordinary people from across the region answered the appeal, the resources committed by multiple agencies, and the fact that even that collective search ended with the recovery of the body rather than the safe return the family and the volunteers had hoped for.

Noah Woods lived in East Bergholt with his mother Charlie Peck, his father Rhys Woods, and a baby brother. Family statements released through Suffolk Police described him as a happy, cheeky, playful three-year-old who loved to laugh and giggle and who brought joy wherever he went. He was at the centre of their world. Despite mild hearing loss, speech delay, and an ongoing ᴀssessment for autism that had not yet produced a diagnosis, he was learning every day and had only recently started finding and using his voice. That voice, the family said, was unique and wonderful and is one of the things they miss most. He adored his little brother, followed him, entertained him, and made him laugh; the bond was described as incredibly special.
