“THAT YOUNG LADY WAS BORN TO FLY”: Flight Instructor Pays Heartbreaking Tribute to 20-Year-Old Co-Pilot Nathalia Filgueiras After Florida Jet tᩚraɢedy

After four decades of teaching pilots, Chris Kirk says he has never met a student quite like Nathalia Filgueiras. The 20-year-old co-pilot, whose passion and remarkable natural ability left a lasting impression on her instructors, was among nine people who lost their lives in a devastating private jet 𝔠r𝘢sh in Florida. Now, those who knew her are remembering the young woman whose greatest happiness was being in the sky.

The aviation community is mourning the loss of 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras following a tragic Learjet 60 𝔠r𝘢sh in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, 2026.

Among those struggling to come to terms with her passing is Christopher Kirk, her former flight instructor and mentor, who says Nathalia was one of the most extraordinary students he had encountered throughout his 40-year career.

In an emotional tribute shared on social media, Kirk did not hold back his admiration for the young pilot.

“I was one of Nathalia’s first instructors and mentor. She was without a doubt the most naturally gifted pilot I have ever taught, and I have been teaching for 40 years!!”

He then delivered the words that have resonated with so many people following the tᩚraɢedy:

“That young lady was born to fly!”

For Kirk, these were not simply words of praise. They reflected years of watching a determined young woman develop her abilities, overcome challenges and demonstrate an extraordinary love for aviation.

Long before she ever entered the cockpit of a private jet, Nathalia was a young girl fascinated by flying.

Her father, Allan Filgueiras, was a pilot himself and introduced his daughter to aviation when she was just 12 years old.

What began as an opportunity to experience flying alongside her father soon became a lifelong passion.

Nathalia worked hard to turn that childhood dream into reality. By the age of 17, she had earned her pilot’s license, reportedly achieving the milestone while she was still in high school.

Her father later recalled how excited she was when she finally began earning a living doing something she loved.

She once told him that she could hardly believe people were actually paying her to fly an aircraft — something she would happily have paid to do herself.

“It was her happiest moment to fly,” he recalled.

Their relationship was built around aviation, and as Nathalia gained experience, something remarkable happened: the daughter who had once learned from her father eventually became skilled enough to instruct him.

“When we were flying together, I used to instruct her, but then she became my instructor,” Allan remembered.

Kirk’s tribute revealed just how exceptional Nathalia’s abilities appeared during her training.

He recalled that she consistently impressed examiners during her flight tests, known as check rides.

One particularly remarkable achievement came during her Learjet qualification.

According to Kirk, Nathalia had fewer than 1,100 flight hours when she completed her demanding Pilot-in-Command type-rating assessment.

Her performance was so impressive that the examiner reportedly believed she had approximately 5,000 hours of flying experience.

Kirk also gave her opportunities to fly different types of aircraft, including tailwheel airplanes and the Cessna Caravan.

One of his favorite memories involved her enthusiasm for aerobatic training.

When he gave Nathalia her spin endorsement as part of her Certified Flight Instructor training, she wanted to practice spins repeatedly.

Kirk jokingly recalled that they performed so many spins that he eventually began feeling nauseated and had to stop.

“She absolutely loved spinning my little Cessna 150 Aerobat,” he later recalled.

He remembered how much she enjoyed the experience, even finding it amusing that her instructor was the one who eventually needed a break.

But beyond her technical ability, Kirk said what truly separated Nathalia from many other aspiring pilots was her genuine passion.

He explained that some students appeared more interested in reaching commercial airlines and earning a substantial salary than in the actual experience of flying.

Nathalia, he insisted, was different.

She genuinely loved aviation.

“She was PASSIONATE about flying!!! She was a 100% natural born pilot!!!” he wrote.

The Final Flight From Texas to the Bahamas

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, Nathalia was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 private aircraft alongside 55-year-old pilot Jeff Gregory.

The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading toward North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.

At approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, the aircraft crashed near Military Trail in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida.

All nine people aboard lost their lives.

The victims included Nathalia and Captain Jeff Gregory, businessman Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children, Emma and Charlie, their nanny Ana María Ramírez Cetina, and family friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr.

The tᩚraɢedy also affected people on the ground, with a driver sustaining injuries.

According to information released by aviation authorities and reported by PEOPLE, the aircraft encountered icing and severe turbulence before the emergency escalated.

Radio communications captured Nathalia informing air traffic control about the developing situation.

As the aircraft began descending rapidly, her transmissions became increasingly urgent.

In one of the final emergency communications, she reported:

“We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute!”

The recordings have since become an important part of the investigation into the aircraft’s final moments.

Kirk believes Nathalia’s calm and deliberate communications could provide investigators with valuable information about what happened.

He has emphasized that her actions demonstrated remarkable professionalism under unimaginable pressure.

However, he has avoided speculating about the cause of the 𝔠r𝘢sh, leaving that responsibility to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Her Instructor Says Her Final Communications Revealed Her Courage

Speaking about Nathalia’s final moments, Kirk described her as an extraordinary person whose professionalism continued to shine even during the emergency.

He suggested that very few pilots could maintain such composure while facing circumstances of that severity.

In an interview with PEOPLE, he also reflected on the personal pain of losing someone he had mentored for years.

“Because I was close to her, it ripped my heart out and left me with a deep feeling of emptiness,” Kirk said.

He remembered her as a sweet and wonderful young woman who was respected and adored by the people fortunate enough to know her.

He also rejected questions suggesting that her young age meant she was not qualified to serve as a Learjet co-pilot.

According to Kirk, her opportunity came through her flying skills, dedication and the way she demonstrated her abilities throughout training.

For him, Nathalia was not simply a young person who had achieved an impressive position early in life.

She was a pilot who had worked hard to earn her place.

Her Father Breaks His Silence: “She Showed Me What It Is to Be a Hero”

On November 6, five days after the 𝔠r𝘢sh, Nathalia’s father, Allan Filgueiras, spoke publicly about his daughter’s passing for the first time.

Fighting back tears, he described her as gifted and remembered the extraordinary bond they shared through their love of flying.

He revealed that he had repeatedly listened to the recordings of her final communications with air traffic control, trying to understand what had happened.

Hearing his daughter’s voice during those final moments was heartbreaking, but it also filled him with pride.

“She showed me what it is to be a hero,” he said.

He recalled wishing desperately that he could have been beside her in the aircraft, helping her through the emergency.

“I wanted to be by her side. Inside the plane. To help. To be by her teammates,” he said emotionally.

His family and legal representatives also addressed criticism questioning whether Nathalia had enough experience to serve as a co-pilot at just 20 years old.

They emphasized that she had accumulated more than 1,300 flight hours and completed the necessary training and qualifications for her position.

Their intention, they explained, was to protect not only her memory but also her professional reputation.

The family has not assigned blame for the accident and says it will await the findings of the official investigation.

An Investigation Continues as Loved Ones Remember Nine Lives Lost

The NTSB continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the Learjet 60 𝔠r𝘢sh.

Investigators have recovered aircraft debris, including parts of an engine and sections of the aircraft’s tail, some of which were found miles from the impact site.

The cockpit voice recorder had not yet been located in the latest reports, leaving important questions about the aircraft’s final moments unanswered.

Authorities have not established the cause of the accident, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, Nathalia’s family, friends and former instructors are left remembering a young woman whose future once seemed full of possibilities.

For Chris Kirk, the loss is deeply personal. After 40 years of teaching, he says Nathalia stands out as one of the most naturally gifted pilots he ever had the privilege of training.

His final message captured the admiration he will always carry for her:

“I pray that she continues to fly amongst the clouds in heaven. May she rest in peace and God watch over her.”

At just 20 years old, Nathalia had already achieved something many aspiring pilots spend a lifetime working toward.

She had turned her childhood dream into a profession.

And although her journey ended far too soon, the people who taught her, flew alongside her and loved her say her passion for aviation will never be forgotten.

For those who knew Nathalia, she will always be remembered as the young woman who was happiest in the sky — a gifted pilot who was, in her instructor’s words, born to fly.
