Authorities Confirm Missy Woods DNA Scandal Did Not Affect Evidence in the JonBenét Ramsey Investigation

The 2026 guilty plea and subsequent sentencing of former Colorado Bureau of Investigation forensic analyst Yvonne “Missy” Woods to ten years in prison for manipulating laboratory data in more than a thousand cases raised immediate questions about every cold case that had pᴀssed through the CBI laboratory. Woods pleaded guilty in June 2026 to charges including cybercrime, perjury, forgery, and attempting to influence a public servant after an investigation found she had altered or deleted data related to quality-control processes and casework over many years. Her misconduct affected roughly one in ten of the cases she handled during a career that began in the mid-1990s.

Boulder Police and the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office both stated after reviewing the relevant records that Woods’ actions had no impact on the JonBenét Ramsey evidence. Early DNA testing in the case was performed by an independent laboratory outside Colorado, and authorities indicated that the unidentified male profile recovered from the victim’s clothing was not generated under Woods’ work. The police department said a CBI review found no effect on the Ramsey materials, and the district attorney’s office reached the same conclusion, noting that the investigation team continued to meet and evaluate evidence into 2026.

John Ramsey has acknowledged that the initial testing was done privately and has said the family does not believe the core DNA findings were compromised by the later scandal. At the same time he has continued to press for additional items from the crime scene, some of which he says were never fully sampled, to be examined by specialized private laboratories capable of forensic genetic genealogy. Police have maintained that evidence remains available for testing when validated methods can produce reliable results, and they have described the case as still active.

The Woods matter has increased public scrutiny of laboratory practices across Colorado, yet the specific statements from Boulder authorities separate the Ramsey investigation from the broader controversy. No new charges or identifications have been announced in the Ramsey case as a result of the laboratory review. The episode has, however, reinforced calls from the family and others for transparent, independently verified testing of remaining biological evidence using the most current techniques available.
