Kind-Hearted Dad of Two Lost to Gulf Current After Attempting to Rescue Hooked Seagull

William “Stone” Romberg, 31, spent the afternoon of October 25 fishing with friends off Carillon Beach in Panama City Beach. A cast from the shore near Philips Inlet snagged a seagull. Romberg, who worked as the La Dolce Vita beach services manager and was known among owners and guests at the nearby condominiums for his helpfulness, chose to enter the water to untangle the bird. During the effort the hook and the bird became caught on his hand. When he tried to swim back, the current took him farther into the Gulf of Mexico.

Friends who had been with him lost sight of him temporarily; when they found him he was still entangled in the fishing line. They brought him to shore and attempted resuscitation, but he did not survive. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Romberg leaves his wife Taylor and two young daughters, ages three and one. The youngest daughter’s first birthday had been celebrated just two weeks earlier. He had grown up in metro Atlanta, attended George Walton Comprehensive High School, and later moved to the Florida Panhandle where he built a life working on the beach. Colleagues and neighbors described him as a wonderful husband and father whose kindness left a lasting impression. In the immediate aftermath, two separate GoFundMe pages were created to help the family with funeral costs and living expenses; together they raised more than $300,000 in a matter of days. Coverage from outlets in both Florida and Atlanta focused on the sequence of the accidental hook, the decision to enter the water, the entanglement of the hand, and the role of the current in the drowning.

The afternoon began routinely for William “Stone” Romberg and the friends fishing with him near the Pinnacle Port Condominiums at Carillon Beach. The 31-year-old Atlanta native cast his line into the inlet and inadvertently hooked a seagull. Rather than cut the line or leave the bird, he swam out to release it. Accounts compiled from his employer, family statements on fundraising pages, and reports to local media indicate that while he was working to free the animal, both the hook and the seagull became caught on his hand, trapping him in the gear. A strong current then carried him farther from shore. His companions lost visual contact before locating him again, still wrapped in the line.

They recovered his body and performed CPR, but Romberg drowned. He is survived by his wife Taylor and daughters Hadley, three, and Lainey, one. The family had recently celebrated Lainey’s first birthday. Romberg managed beach services for La Dolce Vita at the Carillon Beach complex and was described by coworkers as someone whose warmth and willingness to help others stood out. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed details of the response. In the days after the October 25 incident, tributes appeared across social media from both the Florida beach community and people who knew him from his years in metro Atlanta. Multiple fundraising campaigns quickly surpᴀssed six figures each, reflecting the scale of support for the young family. Reporting from national and local outlets has consistently centered on the accidental nature of the initial hook, the entanglement during the rescue attempt, and the current’s role in the fatal outcome.
