She Woke Up Six Days After the State Injected Her Twice With a Drug Meant to K*ll Her

Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s dєatᩚh row, became the first person in the modern era known to survive receiving the drugs of a lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n when the state’s attempt to execute her on September 30, 2026, failed at the Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution. After two doses of the caustic barbiturate pentobarbital, she was rushed to a Nashville hospital in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition, intubated and placed on a ventilator. For several days her prognosis appeared grim; her attorneys were told that brain function appeared absent and that life support might be withdrawn. Then, on October 6, to the shock of her legal team and medical staff alike, she regained consciousness and began speaking. She was angry and confused, asking where she was and who the people around her were, and fully aware that the state had tried to end her life. At the time she could not swallow, had not eaten since the exє𝔠uti☉n date, suffered from a blood clot in one arm and pneumonia, and could not move her arms. Her hands were so swollen that one attorney compared them to inflated surgical gloves.

Lawyers described severe injuries from repeated attempts to establish intravenous access—at least seven needles were used during an ordeal lasting more than two hours, and one needle emerged bent at a ninety-degree angle. The pentobarbital, highly alkaline and compared by experts to bleach or Drano, had burned and blistered tissue in both arms. A Davidson County Chancery Court hearing the following day produced a broad order from Chancellor I’Ashea Myles requiring the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve virtually every piece of evidence connected to the attempt, including drugs, syringes, IV lines, medical equipment, pH๏τographs, video and audio recordings, witness accounts, emails, text and Signal messages, and documentation of any complications or the 911 call that ultimately stopped the procedure.

The same court later reopened Pike’s earlier lawsuit challenging the state’s single-drug protocol, finding extraordinary circumstances. Governor Bill Lee suspended all remaining executions for the rest of the year and ordered an independent investigation; the prisons commissioner resigned. Pike, sentenced to dєatᩚh for her role in the 1995 torture and murder of nineteen-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer, had spent more than three decades largely in isolation. Her survival immediately raised questions about whether the state would attempt exє𝔠uti☉n again, whether her injuries and cognitive difficulties would support new consтιтutional claims, and whether the governor might commute the sentence to life without parole. Attorneys continued to press for preservation of evidence and for greater access while she remained hospitalized, emphasizing that any future litigation would depend on an accurate record of what occurred in the exє𝔠uti☉n chamber.

By the time Christa Pike left the hospital roughly ten days after the September 30 attempt, her physical recovery had been described by her attorneys as remarkable. She had moved from unconsciousness on a ventilator to walking with ᴀssistance, regaining strength and movement in her injured arms, and resuming a regular diet. Her lungs had cleared, and physicians expressed encouragement about her physical progress even while cautioning that lasting effects of the two doses of pentobarbital remained unknown.
