Grandmother Was Sole Provider for Expanded Household of Nearly 20, New Court Filing Reveals in Ohio Case

A new court filing has shed additional light on the financial and living arrangements inside the Vinton County home where 16 children were discovered living in severe conditions in late June 2026. According to documents submitted by her attorney, 67-year-old Christina Siders carried almost the entire financial burden for a household that grew from two people to roughly 20 after her son’s family moved in.

Christina Siders faces 19 counts of child endangerment stemming from the case. Her public defender, Kandra Roberts, filed a motion seeking to reduce the $300,000 bond currently set for her. In the filing, Roberts emphasizes that her client has never been charged with a criminal offense in her 67 years and has no history of failing to appear in court. The attorney also states there is no evidence that Christina ever threatened anyone.

The motion provides a clearer picture of how the household developed. Christina had originally lived with her husband, Gary Siders Sr., in a two-person home. The situation changed when their son, Gary Siders Jr., his wife Elizabeth, and the 16 children moved into the residence. What had been a modest household expanded overnight into a group of about 20 people sharing the same space.

According to the defense, Christina became the only adult consistently earning income and covering essential costs. Roberts wrote that she alone paid the rent, utilities, and other basic necessities for every adult and child living under her roof. At the same time, she was the primary caregiver for her husband’s serious medical needs. His condition was so significant that the court later released him on a recognizance bond because he required frequent medical treatment and would likely not survive without it. While managing her husband’s care, Christina reportedly neglected her own documented medical and mєntal-health needs. Her attorney argues these issues would be better addressed outside of jail.

Christina entered a not-guilty plea to all charges on September 25, 2026. The judge indicated she would take the bond-reduction request under consideration and issue a written decision. As of the latest reports, no immediate change to the bond had been granted.

The 16 children, who ranged in age from approximately 18 months to 18 years when they were removed from the home on June 30, remain in the temporary care of county authorities. The state of Ohio previously provided $1 million in emergency funding to Vinton County to support their medical treatment, placement, and ongoing needs. Officials have continued to describe the conditions inside the home as extremely neglected and have stated that the primary focus remains the children’s recovery and long-term welfare.

The new filing offers the most detailed account yet of the financial pressures inside the household in the period leading up to the children’s removal. Defense attorneys continue to present Christina as the sole long-term provider who took on the expanded responsibilities after her son’s family moved in, while prosecutors maintain the seriousness of the charges against all four adults originally arrested in the case.
