Skeletal Remains of Missing Texas Student Identified Nearly Six Years After š” rš˜¢sh and Disappearance

Nearly six years after a young Texas college student vanished following a car š” rš˜¢sh while driving home for Christmas, his remains have finally been found and identified. Jason Landry, a 21-year-old Texas State University student, disappeared on December 13, 2020, after his vehicle was discovered abandoned on a rural road. The confirmation of his idenтιтy in September 2026 has brought a measure of resolution to a long and painful missing-person case, though key questions about what happened after the š” rš˜¢sh remain unanswered.

On the night of December 13, 2020, Landry was traveling from San Marcos, where he attended Texas State University, to his family’s home in Missouri City for the holiday. Sometime after midnight, his Nissan Altima was found crashed and left on Salt Flat Road near Luling in Caldwell County, roughly an hour southeast of Austin. When deputies arrived, they found his phone and wallet still inside the damaged car, along with some of his clothing scattered nearby. There was no sign of Landry himself. Investigators concluded that he had likely survived the impact and left the vehicle on foot before disappearing into the surrounding area.

What followed was an extensive multi-year search. Law enforcement agencies, specialized search teams, and community volunteers conducted more than 30 separate operations across the region. A reward was offered for information that could help locate him. Despite the sustained efforts, no trace of the young man was ever recovered. The case remained open as a missing-person investigation, weighing heavily on his family and those who continued to look for answers.

The breakthrough came on September 8, 2026. A local resident in Caldwell County was cutting grį“€ss when he noticed an unusual object. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a human skull. The remains were found only about ten minutes from the original š” rš˜¢sh site, yet outside the boundaries of the previous search zones. Authorities recovered the skeletal remains and submitted them for forensic analysis.

DNA testing performed by the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification confirmed that the remains belonged to Jason Landry. The Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case Unit publicly announced the identification on September 23, 2026. Officials noted that the condition of the skeletal remains does not currently allow investigators to determine a definitive cause or manner of dєatᩚh. Importantly, there has been no evidence pointing to foul play.

Attorney General Ken Paxton described the development as a significant moment in a case that had remained unresolved for nearly six years. In a statement, he expressed sympathy for the Landry family, acknowledging the deep suffering they have endured, and said the Cold Case Unit remains committed to seeking answers for families across Texas.

While the identification ends the long period of uncertainty about Landry’s whereabouts, it does not fully explain the final hours after he left his damaged vehicle. Investigators continue to examine the evidence in the hope that further analysis may yet provide additional insight into the circumstances of his dєatᩚh.

For the Landry family, the discovery marks both an end and a beginning—the end of years spent searching for their son and brother, and the beginning of a new phase focused on understanding how a routine drive home for Christmas ended in tᩚraÉ¢edy.
