CHRISTA PIKE’S FINAL LEGAL FIGHT TAKES ANOTHER TURN AS U.S. SUPREME COURT CLEARS PATH FOR TENNESSEE

Christa Pike’s long-running legal battle reached a dramatic new stage this week after a series of last-minute court decisions surrounding her scheduled exec#tion in Tennessee.

Pike, 50, has spent nearly three decades on dєatᩚh row after being convicted in the 1995 mu#der of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Her attorneys have continued challenging the sentence, including arguments concerning her history of childhood ab#se and whether that history received adequate consideration during the original sentencing process.

On September 23, the Tennessee Supreme Court rejected Pike’s request for a stay. Her attorneys then continued pursuing relief in federal court. On September 29, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Pike’s application for a stay as well as her peтιтion for review.

But the case was not over.

On September 30, roughly an hour before Pike was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a temporary stay. The court said additional time was needed to consider Pike’s latest legal arguments, including claims involving her childhood ab#se and whether her federal case could be reopened.

The development briefly placed the scheduled exec#tion on hold and prompted Tennessee to seek immediate intervention from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Later that day, the nation’s highest court lifted the Sixth Circuit’s stay, clearing the way for Tennessee to proceed. Justice Brett Kavanaugh signed the order, while Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.

The legal dispute has drawn attention not only because of Pike’s nearly 30 years on dєatᩚh row, but also because of the unusual timing of the final court proceedings. A scheduled exec#tion was first placed on hold just before it was due to occur, only for the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse that pause later the same day.

For Slemmer’s family, the latest developments have brought another round of uncertainty more than three decades after her daughter’s d#ath.

Pike’s case also holds a historic significance for Tennessee. If carried out, it would mark the state’s first exec#tion of a woman in more than 200 years.

The rapid sequence of rulings shows how a capital case can remain legally active even after multiple courts have rejected requests for intervention. What began with a Tennessee Supreme Court ruling and a U.S. Supreme Court denial was followed by an unexpected federal appellate stay — and then another U.S. Supreme Court order allowing the state to move forward.
