Altai the Amur Tiger Is Safe and the Park Has Reopened: Officials, Staff and Visitors Speak After William Chapman’s De@th

Six days after William Chapman died inside its Land of the Tigers enclosure, Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopened on 16 October 2026 following engagement with the relevant authorities. The park confirmed that Altai, the Amur tiger involved, was safe and well and would not be euthanised; its animal-care team continues to prioritise the animal’s welfare. The Land of the Tigers area itself, the site of the incident that occurred in front of both staff and visitors, was also reopened. Early arrivals reported several hundred cars already on site; families and wildlife enthusiasts walked the elevated 300-metre wooden walkway that overlooks the two paddocks. On that first morning Altai was observed in one paddock with a large piece of meat, while the second tiger, Tschuna, occupied the larger enclosure containing the waterfall—the same space Chapman had entered after climbing two fences around 13:30 BST on 10 October.

Park staff were described by returning visitors as more proactive than usual. A spokesperson had earlier stated that many people had contacted the park specifically about Altai and that the animal remained safely in its enclosure. The park has provided specialist trauma support to its own employees and continues to ᴀssist South Yorkshire Police and other agencies, while declining further public comment while investigations remain active. City of Doncaster Council, the licensing body, is carrying out a health-and-safety inquiry whose outcome will be shared with the coroner. Senior coroner Nicola Mundy has already directed that any relevant CCTV be preserved and that any previous visits by Chapman be reported.

Chapman, a 24-year-old self-employed online trader living independently in Doncaster, was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene after paramedics attended. The opening of his inquest on 15 October recorded that he had climbed two fences, been approached by the tiger, and sustained multiple traumatic injuries that rapidly led to dєatᩚh; the provisional cause is multiple traumatic injuries from animal interaction. He had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous psycH๏τic episodes yet was recorded by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust as highly functioning and independent with no care requirements. His family had expressed concerns about the contact he received from those services; the trust has opened an independent patient-safety investigation. In their public statement the family described him as bright, warm and engaging, acknowledged the long-standing mєntal illness and strong medication, and asked that distressing media content not be circulated while authorities establish what happened.

Visitors returning on 16 October found the entrance quieter than usual at first, with flowers that had been left at the gates moved to a temporary memorial inside the park. Some stood on the walkway watching Altai; keepers were visible nearby. The park’s earlier social-media statement had thanked the public for messages of support and love. No decision has been taken to alter the long-term housing of either Amur tiger. The full inquest remains listed for 18 March 2027, at which point evidence about barrier design, visitor behaviour, CCTV, and the sequence inside the enclosure is expected to be examined in greater detail. Until then the park operates with the Land of the Tigers open, Altai confirmed unharmed, and all formal inquiries continuing in parallel.
