Minutes After Saying “One Day All of Us Here Will Also Die,” Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari Was Struck by a Falling Cross During Mᴀss

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari stood at the altar of Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro in Guayaquil on the evening of October 17, 2026, delivering the homily of the Mᴀss he was celebrating. In the course of that reflection he addressed the congregation and the viewers following the livestream with words that would later be replayed countless times: one day all of those present would also die. He spoke about the use of time, about the difference between hours spent on ordinary concerns and the time given to God, to family, and to the people closest to them. The tone was calm and pastoral. Minutes later a large wooden crucifix that had been fixed to the wall behind the altar detached and fell, striking him.

Parishioners rushed forward. An ambulance was called. By the time medical personnel arrived, the priest was already ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the dєatᩚh the same night in a statement signed by Cardinal Archbishop Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera. The note announced that Father Patricio, a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer who served as parish priest of the church in the Central Vicariate, had gone to the Father’s house. It made no mention of the circumstances. Those details emerged from the livestream itself and from local reporting that followed. He was fifty-two years old. Born in Cuenca on November 6, 1973, he had made his religious profession in the Redemptorists on August 15, 2000, and had been ordained a priest on October 15, 2005. Only two days earlier the archdiocese had marked another anniversary of that ordination.

The church where he died sits in the south-central part of Guayaquil. The Mᴀss was being transmitted from his own profile, a practice that allowed parishioners who could not attend in person to follow the liturgy. Video stills and short clips later circulated widely, showing the priest in a green chasuble at the microphone and then the moment the cross came loose. Police in Guayaquil made a preliminary determination that the dєatᩚh was accidental, caused by the impact of a heavy object. Family members who gathered for the wake in Cuenca asked that the precise reason the cross fell be investigated. One relative told local media that the timing, during the celebration of Mᴀss, was striking and that an inquiry in Guayaquil was warranted. The Archdiocese indicated that the cause of the detachment remained under official review and that further comment would wait for the competent authorities.

In the days after the dєatᩚh, fellow Redemptorists and parishioners described Father Patricio as a simple, approachable priest who had served in Loja, Durán, Vinces, Manta, and finally Guayaquil. He had promoted Eucharistic adoration and maintained close contact with young people and with families in need. The phrase he used about the certainty of dєatᩚh was not an isolated remark; it formed part of a longer reflection on priorities, on the Gospel of the day, and on the limited time each person is given. After the accident that reflection acquired a weight it did not possess while he was still speaking. The body was taken to Cuenca for the funeral rites. A Mᴀss of Christian burial was scheduled at the cemetery there. Across Ecuador and in Catholic media outside the country the dєatᩚh was reported as both a local tᩚraɢedy and a stark reminder of the theme the priest himself had raised only minutes earlier.
