Cindy Crawford Opens Up About a New Chapter With Husband Rande Gerber

Cindy Crawford is opening up about a major transition in her marriage to Rande Gerber as the couple adjusts to life after their children have grown up and left home.

The longtime couple, who married in 1998, share two children, Presley and Kaia Gerber. In a recent interview with PORTER, Crawford reflected on what she described as an unfamiliar stage of marriage: becoming empty nesters.

Crawford, 60, explained that while couples often discuss their plans for having children and building a family when they first get married, they rarely talk about what their relationship might look like once those children become independent adults.

“When you get married, you talk about what kind of family you want or where we’re going to live,” Crawford said in the interview. “But no one ever talks about what this phase looks like, empty nesting, because it’s so far away you can’t even imagine it.”

Rather than describing the situation as the end of a chapter, Crawford characterized it as an opportunity for her and Gerber, 64, to reconsider what they want from their life together.

She said the couple is asking themselves questions about how they want to spend their time, including whether they want to travel more and what their priorities should be now that parenting young children is no longer part of their everyday routine.

For Crawford, the transition also involves learning how to give her adult children more independence. She acknowledged that parenting grown children requires a different approach and that she has been trying to step back, even when she might personally choose a different path for them.

“When they become adults, all of a sudden you’re like, okay, I’ve got to back off here,” she said.

Crawford and Gerber have spent decades balancing family life with successful careers. Crawford became one of the world’s most recognizable supermodels, while Gerber built a career in hospitality and business. Their children also followed their parents into the public eye, with Kaia becoming an established model and Presley previously working in fashion.

Crawford has spoken positively about her relationship with Gerber in the past, and the couple have continued to appear together publicly. Earlier this year, they were pH๏τographed enjoying time together in Miami, and Crawford has also spoken about the importance of continuing to grow as a couple rather than simply defining their relationship through their roles as parents.

The PORTER interview was published on September 10, just days before the family experienced a devastating loss. Presley Gerber died on September 20 at the age of 27 at a rehabilitation facility, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. His cause of dєatᩚh has not been publicly disclosed. The family has asked for privacy.

Presley’s dєatᩚh has placed Crawford and Gerber’s earlier comments about their children and family life in a very different context. Before his dєatᩚh, Presley had publicly discussed his struggles with depression, addiction and mєntal health, while Kaia spoke in a September 2026 Vogue interview about her brother’s long struggle with drug addiction.

Reports following Presley’s dєatᩚh have described Crawford and Gerber as deeply involved in supporting their son during his struggles. People reported that the family was working toward a private memorial and seeking to keep the arrangements away from intense media attention.

For now, Crawford’s comments about empty nesting offer a glimpse into a period when she and Gerber were already trying to redefine their relationship as their children became adults. Her remarks did not announce a separation or confirm that the couple’s marriage was in trouble. Instead, she described a process of figuring out what comes next for two people who have spent much of their marriage raising a family.

After nearly three decades together, Crawford and Gerber now face a profoundly different family reality. The questions they had been asking about travel, independence and their life together have taken on new meaning following the loss of their son, while their daughter Kaia remains an important part of the family.

The couple has largely kept their private life away from the spotlight, and Crawford’s recent comments suggest that their focus has been on navigating change together rather than making any dramatic announcement about their marriage.
