These conjoined twins faced extraordinary odds โ€” today, Ritaj and Rital are living very different lives after a remarkable separation journey.

Abdelmajeed, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Soba University Hospital in Sudan, met Enas, four years younger than him, while they were studying at the University of Khartoum. Just months after their wedding, the couple were overjoyed to discover they were expecting a baby.

However, at four months pregnant, an ultrasound revealed that Enas was carrying twin girls who were joined at the head.

Abdelmajeed recalled: โ€œWe were horrified when we received the ultrasound results. Healthcare resources were limited at the time, so all we could do was pray.โ€

Enas added: โ€œI could only cry when I heard the news. I was worried about my babiesโ€™ safety and didnโ€™t know whether they would survive long enough to be born.โ€

Fortunately, Abdelmajeed found an experienced specialist to help deliver the twins. At 36 weeks, doctors performed a C-section. Enas experienced severe blood loss and came close to losing her life, but she and both daughters pulled through. The couple named their girls Ritaj and Rital.

Their birth was considered a remarkable medical milestone. Initial examinations revealed that the girls were joined at the head and shared a complex blood supply, making their condition especially challenging.

After leaving the hospital, their parents faced the demanding task of caring for two babies whose sleeping and feeding schedules were often different. They eventually decided to pursue separation surgery, hoping their daughters could have greater independence as they grew up.

With limited financial resources, the family sought help from charitable organisations and received support from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Dr David Dunaway, one of the specialists involved in their treatment, explained that twins surviving with such a complex condition was extremely rare. Separating them presented numerous medical challenges, and he praised the familyโ€™s courage throughout the difficult journey.

In April 2011, Ritaj and Rital travelled to the United Kingdom to prepare for a series of major operations. Hospital examinations revealed additional concerns, including dangerously high blood pressure in Rital.

The girls underwent two operations in May, another in July and their final separation procedure in August 2011.

The final operation lasted 13 hours. Their parents prepared themselves emotionally for the possibility that the outcome might not be what they hoped for, as the procedures carried significant risks, including potential nerve damage.

Against the odds, both girls made it through the challenging surgeries without serious physical complications.

Watching their daughters being brought out separately felt like witnessing their birth all over again. Abdelmajeed and Enas expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the team of more than 20 medical professionals who helped make the separation possible. For the family, seeing both girls come through the journey was an extraordinary blessing.

A NEW CHAPTER

Ritaj and Rital are now 13 years old and continuing to grow and develop. Rital has been diagnosed with autism and experiences some learning difficulties, so her parents enrolled her in a school that supports children with additional educational needs.

The twins needed several months to adjust to their new lives after surgery. Today, they are active, lively girls who continue to share a special bond and show deep love for one another.

Their journey is a powerful reminder of the courage of two young sisters, the dedication of their family and the medical teams who helped them begin a new chapter together.
