She was still snoring after the second syringe, and Tennessee’s protocol had nothing left to say

On the evening of September 30, 2026, Christa Gail Pike was supposed to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. Instead, after two rounds of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution in Nashville, she was still breathing. Media witnesses later said she could be heard snoring behind the closed curtain, that her chest was still rising, and that she had lifted her head and asked whether the burning in her arm was supposed to happen. By the time officials cut the microphone and cleared the witness room, the state’s written protocol had already run out of instructions. Tennessee prepares a second set of syringes if the inmate is not ᴅᴇᴀᴅ after the first. It does not say what officials are to do if the second set also fails.

Pike, 50, the only woman on the state’s dєatᩚh row, was taken to an off-site medical facility still alive. Her lawyers told courts she had not lost consciousness, still had a heartbeat, and was audibly snoring. A reporter who has covered multiple executions called the sequence unlike anything she had seen. Governor Bill Lee ordered a third-party review and canceled another exє𝔠uti☉n that had been set for later in 2026. The Department of Correction said every step of the lawful protocol approved by the attorney general’s office had been followed. That statement answered the procedural question and left the human one open: a protocol can be followed to the letter and still end with a living prisoner, an open curtain, a closed curtain, and no next line on the page. Pike had been sentenced to dєatᩚh in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a Job Corps student in Knoxville.

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6–3 order, had cleared the September 30 date after a last-minute federal stay. Witness accounts collected by local and international outlets describe a long evening rather than a single moment. Curtains opened. Pike was conscious enough to speak about pain in her arm. A second dose followed. Snoring continued until nearly 9 p.m. Witnesses were escorted out. Emergency vehicles arrived. Attorneys filed emergency papers asking the state to stop and to provide life-saving care. dєatᩚh-penalty specialists called the failure of the single-drug pentobarbital sequence unprecedented in recent Tennessee practice. The case now sits in a narrow legal space. The state says it did what the protocol required.

The defense says the protocol was never built for survival after the second syringe, and that vein access, drug condition, and the absence of on-site emergency care were foreseeable risks. Lee’s review will have to decide whether the failure was a one-night breakdown or evidence that the rulebook itself stops too soon. For the public, the image that traveled farthest was not a legal filing. It was the report that a woman the state had set out to 𝘬iᩚll was still snoring after the procedure was over, and that nobody in the room had a written answer for what came next.
