She asked if the burning was normal, and a bent needle came out of her arm

Christa Gail Pike was supposed to be ᴅᴇᴀᴅ before the witnesses left the room. Instead, the 50-year-old woman strapped to a gurney at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution in Nashville spent the evening of September 30, 2026, talking, moaning, snoring, and asking whether what was happening to her body was how an exє𝔠uti☉n was meant to feel. Media witnesses were brought into the viewing area around 6:41 p.m. The blinds opened at about 7:26 p.m. Pike, who would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, gave a final statement that sounded like a farewell rather than a struggle. She said she was leaving the world the way she had spent most of her life, with love, that she loved her detractors as much as the people on her side, and that she was at peace and ready to be free. She called it a happy day. With her spiritual adviser, the Rev. Mikey Noechel, she repeated a short blessing about being at peace and being kind and gentle to oneself, and she directed the same words toward the people behind the glᴀss.

The calm did not last. At about 7:34 p.m., according to WKRN reporter Tori Gessner, Pike said her arm felt as if it were about to burst open. One account has her describing a spot that was throbbing and asking Noechel whether it happened like that. He told her to relax. She said she was trying. A tear ran down her right cheek. She smiled and laughed at points. She also kept talking. Her lawyers later said she was not only conscious but trying to help the team find a usable vein, asking them to try higher on her shoulder, thanking them when they thought a line was in. Attorney Stephen Ferrell said she was cooperative and at peace through that stretch. The exє𝔠uti☉n team, her lawyer Randy Spivey said, spent about an hour trying to establish intravenous access and used at least seven needles in her left arm alone. One of those needles, Spivey said, appeared bent when it was pulled out after a failed attempt. Her right arm later turned purple, he said. Lawyers had warned for months that her veins were small, that blood draws had already been difficult, and that a blood condition would make access worse. A request for a smaller needle had been denied.

The curtain closed at 7:46 p.m. and Noechel was asked to leave. It lifted again at 7:49 p.m. Pike was snoring, mouth open. The curtain shut at 8:05 p.m. and stayed down. Witnesses could still hear her. The chamber microphone was cut at 8:53 p.m. and they were escorted out while she was still breathing.

Nashville Banner reporter Steven Hale later said he could not overstate how much of what happened took place behind a closed curtain while she was still alive. WPLN’s Catherine Sweeney, who has covered most of the state’s recent executions, said none of it was normal and that it went really poorly. John North of WBIR, who had covered Pike’s original trial, said it did not appear to go the way officials thought it would, and that the Department of Correction had a lot of answers to give. By the time an ambulance and a fire truck arrived around 9:15 p.m., lights interrupting a witness press conference, Pike had received two 50-milliliter syringes of pentobarbital under Tennessee’s single-drug protocol and her heart had not stopped. The ambulance left at about 9:28 p.m., trailed by correction vans. She was in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition the next day, receiving lifesaving care. Spivey said he was haunted by the night and that what he saw should never happen again. Ferrell put it more bluntly: her greatest fear was not dєatᩚh but a prolonged, painful, traumatic dєatᩚh, and that is what happened, minus the dєatᩚh.
