Riders Watched Him Fly Free of His Seat, Strike the Train Three Times, Then Drop Onto the Roof of a Haunted House Below

On October 12, 2026, witnesses at Six Flags Over Georgia described a horrifying sequence on the Goliath roller coaster in which Hᴀssan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, was ejected from his seat, collided with the moving train multiple times, and fell toward structures beneath the track. One account relayed to local television stations said he hit the train three different times before landing on the roof of a haunted-house attraction. Other observers reported seeing him appear to hover briefly as the car continued beneath him before he was thrown clear on a turn. Police confirmed he struck other patrons—four of them minors who sustained non-life-threatening injuries—before falling beneath the ride, where responders found him unresponsive. He had been seated next to his partner’s niece during what was meant to be a birthday celebration.

Kariem worked as an IT manager, technology teacher and robotics coach at Wesley International Academy in Atlanta; the school described him as a cherished member whose presence would be deeply missed. The Goliath is a Bolliger & Mabillard hypercoaster that reaches approximately 200 feet and speeds around 70 mph and uses only a lap-bar restraint with no secondary belt. Former operators and safety experts have explained that the system is designed so the train cannot leave the station unless all restraints register as properly locked, typically requiring a minimum number of clicks, yet questions remain about whether a mechanical issue, sensor problem, operator check, or other factor allowed the bar to open or fail under load.

A mother who rode roughly an hour earlier told the ᴀssociated Press that her son’s restraint kept unlocking and he moved seats, leaving the original seat empty with the bar raised when the train departed. Inspection records show the ride pᴀssed its March 2026 state review with no violations, though bushings were flagged for replacement; the relevance of that note to the restraints has not been established. Six Flags closed Goliath indefinitely and temporarily idled nine other coasters sharing similar manufacturer and restraint characteristics at parks including those in New Jersey, Illinois, California, Ohio, North Carolina and Canada.

The company’s stock declined sharply, with some reports citing drops of more than 14 to 20 percent in the immediate aftermath and levels approaching multi-year lows. CEO John Reilly later stated that seat belts would be installed on Goliath and comparable rides as part of reinforced safety measures, and independent engineers have been engaged to review procedures. The Cobb County Police Major Crimes Unit and the state insurance and safety fire office continue their parallel investigations; no final determination of cause has been released, and no public autopsy findings confirming a precise restraint failure or any filed class-action complaint appear in the latest available reporting. The episode has prompted renewed discussion among ride experts about the absence of redundant restraints on high-force hypercoasters and the importance of preserving black-box data, video and maintenance records while the inquiry continues.
