Over the past few years, Manchester City have lifted a significant number of trophies.
In addition to winning six of the past seven Premier League titles, Pep Guardiola’s side have also won numerous other domestic and European accolades.
Therefore, it has been a rather successful period to be a City player.
However, previous transfer windows have seen certain names decide to walk away from the Etihad Stadium to start new chapters elsewhere for numerous reasons.
Now that this could reportedly be about to happen again this time around, one pundit has claimed that the player in question for this particular situation could be making a big mistake.
Steve Nicol claims Julian Alvarez would be making a mistake leaving Man City
After Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that Atletico Madrid are looking to land a deal worth over €75m (£64m) for Julian Alvarez, Steve Nicol said this on the matter in a video shared on the ESPN FC YouTube channel.
He said: “When you don’t play in the final, it doesn’t feel the same, it doesn’t. If you’re 24, you can give it another 12 months and be with a team that’s going to maybe win the Champions League, and you are going to play in those games, without that little cream on the top.
“And as far as €75 million, that makes no difference to Alvarez, that €75 million is pushing City into letting him go because City letting him go gives them a problem.
“I just think that where he’s going and when he’s going, he might play but he ain’t going to play in a final, he’s guaranteed, not guaranteed but his percentages of playing in the Champions League or winning the Spanish league are pretty low.”
Alvarez is valuing game time over trophies
In two seasons at the Manchester club, Alvarez has scored 36 goals and delivered 18 assists in 103 appearances across all competitions.
In terms of the trophies he’s secured at City, the Argentine has won two Premier Leagues, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the UEFA SuperCup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Despite appearing in 54 games last season, the 24-year-old didn’t start in the FA Cup final or either of City’s Champions League quarter-final matches against Real Madrid.
He also didn’t start any of the club’s four final Premier League games of their previous campaign.
In our view, given how Alvarez has near enough won every trophy possible during his time in England, it’s understandable why he may be looking to join Atletico in an effort to get more game time and challenge himself in a new country, despite Nicol’s claim that he would be decreasing his chances of winning even more silverware.
