Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has admitted he would just love to see the back of one player at Manchester City.
Manchester City and Liverpool have enjoyed a good rivalry over the last few years.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp built two fantastic teams and thankfully for City fans, the Spaniard managed to get the edge on his counterpart most seasons.
Klopp has now left Liverpool and Reds fans are hoping new manager Arne Slot will be able to build on what the German did at Anfield.
City and Liverpool have put on some amazing, high-quality games and one man who is often front and centre of those matches is Kevin De Bruyne.
Amid speculation of a move to Saudi Arabia, Robbie Fowler has joked he would love to see him leave City.
Robbie Fowler says he would drive Kevin De Bruyne to the airport to make Saudi move
Over the last few weeks, speculation has been rife about De Bruyne’s future.
He is a target for the Saudi Pro League, and recently Al-Ittihad tried to buy him.
Seemingly though, they could not offer what City wanted. Pep eventually said that De Bruyne would be staying at the club.
It was also reported that De Bruyne had turned down potential earnings of £1 million per week as he did not want to uproot his family at the moment.
Fowler has addressed the De Bruyne to Saudi links in a column for the Sunday Mirror. The former striker, who represented both Liverpool and City, joked that he would drive De Bruyne to the airport in order to get him out of the Etihad.
He said (print edition, 28/07, pg. 73): “As a Liverpool fan who wants to win the title and has seen the damage he’s done during a brilliant Premier League career, I’m quite happy to drive him to the airport!
“Seriously though, I’m sure Pep and City fans would be devastated if he left – as he’s still a game-changer.”
Fowler goes on to say that he thinks £55 million De Bruyne can still be ‘a major Premier League player’ for the next couple of years.
A show of respect from Fowler
Obviously this is a comment made completely out of respect for De Bruyne from Fowler, and many others associated with Liverpool would probably say the same.
De Bruyne has had an amazing Premier League career, and is undoubtedly one of the best players the division has ever seen.
He has been so influential for many years for City and De Bruyne will go down as a City and Premier League legend for all the contributions he has made.
It looks like he will now stay for one more season at least, which is good news because as Fowler says, he is still a game-changer. We will see if there is any movement on a potential contract extension, but the feeling at the moment is that he’ll move on next summer and seal one final huge payday elsewhere.
