An Arsenal legend and World Cup winner has said that he hopes the Gunners will sign fellow Brazilian Neymar this summer.
An Arsenal legend has revealed that he hopes to see the Gunners sign former Barcelona star Neymar this summer, in what would be the shock of the transfer window.
Gilberto Silva was part of the famous ‘Invincibles’ squad, and is an Arsenal legend, but his latest comments may have caused something of a stir among the fanbase.
The 47-year-old has said that he wants to see Arsenal sign fellow Brazilian Neymar this summer, in a deal that would no doubt prove to be the biggest shock of the transfer window.
Silva said: “I’d love to see Neymar in the Premier League with Arsenal. Let’s see. It’s not impossible that he could join Arsenal, why not.”
Neymar currently has just one year left on his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, but would likely still command a large fee if a transfer were to happen this summer – given the lack of financial constraint in the Saudi Pro League.
At 32-years-old, the former Barcelona star has also endured a torrid time with injuries in recent years, which makes any potential move for the winger a risk, especially when considering his huge wages, which are currently reported to be an eye-watering £1.9m (€2.2m) per week.
Fans have generally shut down the suggestion of signing Neymar, on social media, with one of X (formerly Twitter) saying: “He would mess up the entire wage system. + I’m not sure he has the work rate Arteta is looking for. So that’s not happening.”
So while Arsenal’s pursuit for a winger to provide cover and competition for Bukayo Saka is no secret, it looks highly unlikely that Silva will get his wish of seeing Neymar in the club’s famous red and white any time soon.
